Is it still a surprise pick if we're talking about it?

      Re: Replacing Hines Ward???

I know we see other positions has more desperate, but this is our WR corp:

1A) Holmes - coming into his own for sure. Will it translate to a yearly 16 game player? We'll see. I'm not saying he won't, but this will be a big year for him to getting rid of any other doubt.
1B) Ward - love him, but he's hurting and is at the top of the hill. He could fall rapidly.
      3) Sweed - potential yes, production to THIS point, no. Can't count on yet, but could be good.
      4) Baker - has some tools, let's see if he gets a change and if he uses them.
      5) ah - we don't have a 5th guy do we?
      6) ah - zoikes
We have 1 guy that may not last long and 1 guy that 'should' be a stud. Then we have 2 relative unknowns for gameday and noone else. That makes me nervous. We don't run the ball well enough to get by with mediocre WRs.

We are in a dire situation here. For 2 reasons. WRs are punks by trade, so you have to be careful and take a team type player and there aren't many that have skills and team abilities.
Robiskie could be one of those guys.

Martin Nance is on the team. Ben's WR/roommate in college. Also someone named Williams, Brandon. 5'11 170

          From Jim Wexell's Daily Buzz

3 p.m.: I'm getting answers down here on the South Side. Sort of. Hines Ward drew the first big media crowd of the season and said that he feels good, has barely started talking contract with the team, believes "everything will take care of itself," and would like to continue playing into 2010 if he stays healthy. I asked him what he has left to accomplish. He said he'd like 10,000 receiving yards and another ring. Well, that could happen this season with 220 receiving yards and some good line play.

Ward talked a good game today, but my guess is that 2009 will be his last season.
Maybe the probability of a WR at 1.32 is much higher than we think it is. It appears Hines will reach his personal goals this season and renegotiating, i.e. downsizing, his contract will be an emotional issue on both sides. If 2009 is it for Hines getting a WR becomes a Round 1 or 2 priority. Wexell tends to be a pretty informed source.

Maybe the focus of this team becomes getting one more for Hines just like they wanted to do it for Bettis in 2005. Just some food for thought.
"My team, may they always be right, but right or wrong...MY TEAM!"

Tomlin would probably grab Mack if he's there at 32 but being he is a defensive guy, he'll probably take a defensive lineman.

Ward in my opinion can not be replaced just due to his work ethis, talent and toughness. With Santonio, Holmes and Ward feeling the spots at this time I beleieve he'll layoff any high picks for receivers.

Granted you can say the same about the defense or any area of the team but the D - line is aging and Hampton as a nose tackle in the 3/4 is going to be on borrowed time eventually. They'll probably want a guy to replace Hampton and soon just to have him on the team and learn from watching big snack.
