I agree whole heartedly with everyone responding, that their careers are very short.

NFL players owe to themselves and their families, to maximize whatever earnings potential they have.

This philosophy is magnified if the player has already won a championship, imo.

    As example- look at Indy-

Look at all of their players that have left for more money, rather than stay with the opportunity to win another championship. This list now appears to include Marvin Harrison and Jeff Saturday.

Why don't the owners keep the players and honor the contracts instead of cutting the players when it is in their best interest. Loyalty is a two way street. Fans have no problems with players being cut without the full contract being paid out, but they want the players to take less money (even though a lot of them leave the game with major injuries to their bodies).

I would take the most money I could if I played in the NFL. Every player is an injury away from being out of the league. God knows that every team is capable of cutting you (injury be damned).
The Steelers’ went through seven consecutive drafts (2003-09) without taking an offensive lineman in the first two rounds, the longest such streak by any franchise this century.

Contracts are written to minimize the current cap hit and load them up on the tail end, the players know this and the teams know this going into negotiations. Hines is going to be a perfect example of this, to minimize his cap hit a few years ago they gave him his guaranteed and then backloaded the salary. He stands at some point soon to make 9 million dollars. If he doesn't renegotiate, he'll be cut, it's that simple. The Steelers will not want to pay a 32 or 33 year old receiver 9 million dollars per annum.

The Steelers are always fair with veterans that are seeking fortune late in their careers.
