    Pat White

WHITE WILLING TO PLAY OTHER POSITIONS
Posted by Mike Florio on February 21, 2009, 10:19 p.m.

One of the most intriguing prospects in this year’s draft is former West Virginia quarterback Pat White.

And I don’t say that simply because yours truly attended most if not all of his home starts during four seasons in Morgantown. (But it helps.) White became a great running quarterback, and in his senior season he showed real potential as a passer.

In fact, at a time when many league observer are looking toward next year’s question of whether Tim Tebow can thrive as an NFL quarterback, most are overlooking that White is this year’s Tebow.

After limiting himself to the quarterback position at the Senior Bowl, White now says that he’s willing to play other positions.

“I would love to be a quarterback, but I also want to help in any way I can,” White said. “Whether it’s wide receiver, punt return, whatever. I just want to get on the field somehow.”

The emergence of the Wildcat formation could give White an opportunity to get his foot in the door. But whether he ultimately can be an every-down option remains to be seen.

The biggest red flag, apart from rarely taking snaps from under center, is his durability. He sustained more than a few injuries while running the ball, and he has a sleek appearance that screams out “handle with care.”

But we’re rooting for him — and we’d like to see him get reuinted with running back Steve Slaton in Houston
I watched every home game and a couple away games that White played in and you always hear about a player with it. Just the ability to win. He has it. I am not going to say he is the best QB or WR out there but he has it.

    Re: Par White

He'd be a huge asset to the Steelers. Punt/Kickoff returner, trick plays (wildcat), Wide Receiver, and most importantly (i hate writing this), but if Ben goes down, we have somewhat of a backup plan without carrying too many QB's. During that game of course, short term, I doubt White could be a starting QB at a consistent pace, more than 1 game.

I'm glad he's not sticking to just one position. You can officially sign me up.

I'd love to get White at 3b or 4. He is a multi-talented player who could help in a number of ways.

If he could transition to WR he could be a Wes Wlker type player who can get yards after the catch.

I was about to throw a flag on this post. Don't you know that it is message board law that you are only allowed to compare white WR's to other white WR's? But since Pat's last name is "White" I will allow it this time.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

pat white would be an excellent pickup in the later rounds...not an early pick, but i wouldn't mind seeing what he would be able to do at WR. it's obvious he has the athleticism, but playing WR in the NFL takes more than that.

I doubt he lasts past Round 4. Too much production in college and you potentially save a roster spot with his abiulity to be your 3rd QB.

yeah that's the thing...i could see him easily going in the 3rd, heck if he impresses he could go in the 2nd

Pat, he did throw. And he impressed. There is an article on SI about how he was the biggest surprise today. Everyone was saying he raised his stock the most here today. He only did QB stuff today. Mayock and everyone on NFL Network just kept talking about him. He is going to run routes and work out as a WR at his pro day at WVU. Check out SI though for that article.

                        Snap Judgments: QBs at combine

INDIANAPOLIS -- Musings, observations and the occasional insight as we wrap up Money Day at the NFL Scouting Combine, the day the quarterbacks show their stuff (at least the ones who deem to work out) ...

                        • Score one for collegiate experience and a little old-fashioned perseverance, because of all the quarterbacks who threw on Sunday in Lucas Oil Stadium, none looked better than West Virginia's Pat White, the record-breaking senior passer who many have been trying to project as anything but a quarterback.

White threw the ball accurately and with authority in his quarterback group, looking poised and comfortable in an unfamiliar setting that has thrown many a highly-ranked quarterback off his game. White was especially strong in throwing deep outs, which always catch the eye of NFL scouts.

"I'll tell you who looked good today and that was Pat White,'' one longtime NFL offensive assistant coach told me. "He really helped himself with that workout. He made people recognize him as a quarterback.''

In a draft class heavy with junior quarterbacks at the top, it was White who generated the most buzz Sunday. Not USC's Mark Sanchez, who was decent but far from spectacular, or Georgia's Matthew Stafford, the top-rated passer who ran a solid 40-yard dash (low 4.8s) but declined to throw here with the rest of the draft's quarterbacks.

White might still be thought of by some NFL talent evaluators as best-suited to be a team's Wildcat formation quarterback and part-time receiver, but all Sunday's throwing session has to do is convince one team to draft him as a full-time quarterback.

"He was sharp and he made all the throws you want to see,'' another NFL talent evaluator told me. "Our quarterbacks coach said he looked better than most people anticipated.''

No, it still sounds like he wants to be a Quarterback. Not doing WR drills at the combine which is more important than your pro day, doesn't help his case for a team like ourselves looking for a WR/KR.

I doubt Pat White lasts past the 2nd with his ability. Think ARE (and where he was selected) and you have Pat White.

Would love to have him. But the Steelers have other needs on Day One. A WR won't be one of those needs, much less a QB.
