B.C. Lions running back Stefan Logan has reportedly signed with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

"When I tried out in January they said they wanted to sign me then but we'd have to do it after the Super Bowl," Logan told TSN.

The two-year contract with the Steelers will be signed on Friday. However, there is no significant signing bonus, a fact that did not bother the South Dakota product.

"I'm not worried about that," Logan told TSN. "They told me I had a good opportunity to make the team as a starting kick and punt returner and as a third down back."

Logan should be able to fit in to the Steelers plans immediately. The team's lack of a reliable third-down back was exposed in the Super Bowl when the Steelers decided to kick a field goal on the first series of the game, rather than go for it on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line.

The chance to play in the NFL was too good to pass up for the 27-year old Logan, especially when he can be a part of a championship club.

"In life you have to take the opportunity when it comes. This is a chance to be closer to my family too. I'm just gonna roll the dice and see how it goes," Logan told TSN.

Lions general manager and head coach Wally Buono discussed the situation with a Vancouver radio station on Thursday.

"We are disappointed for ourselves and our fans because Stefan is a very exciting football player and somebody that we were counting on to be a big part of our football team," Buono said.

Logan enjoyed a breakout campaign in his first year in the CFL as he was among the league leaders in rushing yards with 889 yards on just 122 carries. He also caught 52 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns.

He may be a good returner ... but I don't see how is any better of a 3rd down back than Moore... he is definitely not a short yardage back...

Stefan Logan emerged as one of the college football’s biggest playmakers as a freshman in 2003. He was named 1st Team All NCC after rushing for 1,155 yards and five touchdowns on the year. As a sophomore he ran for 1,345 yards and three touchdowns, and hauled in 19 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown. As a junior, he really exploded. Logan became a 3 time All NCC 1st Team selection, while earning various All America honors, while becoming USD’s all time leading rusher. On the year, he totaled 1,751 yards and 11 touchdowns, 26 catches for 428 yards and two touchdowns. He did not let up as a senior, rushing for 1,707 yards and nine touchdowns, and added 153 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. On special teams, he averaged 15.9 yards per punt return with one touchdown, and averaged 28.2 yards per kick return, with one taken back to the house. Logan is also a sprinter on the USD track team.

Logan is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. He has scored as a runner, receiver, punt returner and kick returner in college. He has excellent speed and quickness, and shows the ability to hit top gear very quickly. Once he gets a step on you, he is not going to be caught. He has developed into a quality receiver out of the backfield over his career as well. Logan has the talent to become an excellent 3rd down back and return specialist.

Logan simply lacks the size to be an every down back in the NFL. He is built well for a player his size, but has a very small frame overall. Playing at the DII level also causes questions about how well his talent will translate. One other issue is that Logan will be a 26 year old rookie next season.

Logan has the explosiveness to make it in the NFL, in a similar role to Darren Sproles or Dante Hall. He has the all around skills as a runner, receiver, and return man to provide a variety of roles a player of his size has to be capable of. His age and playing at a lower level of competition may keep Logan from being drafted, but he could be a player that makes a team out of training camp.

Hmm...ok, drawing the 'looooong' straw & really just speculating, but...

If the Steelers figure him to be a viable 3rd down back, could this actually mean a 'promotion' up the pecking order for Moore, so that he would, in fact, split carries with say, Rashard Mendenhall, and therefore make Willie Parker 'tradeable'?

Or does it just mean Russell didn't perform up to expectations?

As a side note, who do you think is better: the BC Lions or the Detroit Lions?

Well considering in the CFL's last season the BC Lions went 11-7 I'd say they were.

Yeah, but considering Peyton Manning makes about as much as the entire CFL it's not like there is anything resembling parity between the leagues. If they played head to head, would you bet on BC? I think I would take Detroit and hope for the best.

I was just going by BC's record. It would probably be a good game but I wouldn't put any money on Detroit!

In the running game, we need a tank. But in the return game, a guy like this could work out well if he could turn into a Sproles type (I'm not saying that will happen).

He's just an extra body to bring in for the off season. Chances are, he won't make next year's team.

This guy is brought in as a pure kick returner . . . could have used him last season though.

I think we all missed the obvious one here, perhaps this is the end of Carey Davis? He was the original 3rd down back then Mewelde took over. He's no longer the blocking FB as we have McHugh. See ya!

BINGO! Backs like Sproles and Jones Drew may not be big but the quickness, speed and low center of gravity are bonuses in the return game.

The Steelers didn't have a return specialist, this season. They still won the SuperBowl, but it would be nice to have someone who is really a threat back there. Holmes had a tremendous punt return against SD, but did little during the regular season in the return department. Gary Russell was decent but not a big threat.

I think this is an area they would like to address, but I don't believe it indicates a trade of Willie Parker. Look at how quickly backs go down. The Steelers had to use Moore as their primary back often this year and depth is a key at that position. They can find a place for a return specialist somewhere on the roster without trading Willier Parker, which I don't believe will ever happen. When he leaves, it will be because they release him or don't resign him.

I'm OK with the signing of a return specialist, and the cutting of Davis. Let's hope Logan is tougher than most small backs and lasts.
