PITTSBURGH -- The rock band Styx will be performing the National Anthem at Sunday's AFC divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers at Heinz Field. Kickoff time is 4:45 p.m.
In addition to their Anthem performance on Sunday, Styx will also be performing a special A cappella rendition of their hit song, "Renegade," which has become a battle cry for Steelers fans cheering on the team's defense. The band will be entertaining a capacity crowd of over 65,000 fans just prior to kickoff.
Joining the band on the field for the Anthem will be 20 western Pennsylvania soldiers departing for deployment next week.
"We love the way the Steelers use our song 'Renegade,' said Tommy Shaw of Styx. "We especially love their video montage of 'Greatest Hits' using 'Renegade' as the music bed as they hammer opposing team members carrying the ball. That's one video I don't mind not appearing in."sigpicComment

OK, so it's Thursday and now we're REALLY starting to get down to the important stuff surrounding Sunday's game. The Steel City is positively abuzz with the announcement that the national anthem will be sung by, sigh, Styx. That may not be big news in San Diego. (Please, let it NOT be. Cherished as it is, the Star Spangled Banner is frequently subjected to unspeakable butchery in the vocal chords of the wrong singer or singers, but it could be worse. They could be singing "Babe." But I digress.)
This truly is a meaningful choice in Pittsburgh, which I'm told is all about 70's rock and the Steelers, if not in that order. The magic happens when the former, as in Styx, merges with the latter at Heinz Field. Petco Park has "Hell's Bells" _ make that "had," by interesting coincidence _ and Steelers fans go berserk at the playing of "Renegade." It's by Styx. By cracky.
Make fun if you will, but that's only fair. Pittsburgh's making fun of you. Circulating all over Western PeeYay is a verbal text message. Click on the message and you hear the clip from the movie "Anchorman," the one in which Will Ferrell's character signs off the air with "And I'm Ron Burgundy. Go (Perform a Physically Impossible Act), San Diego." And it ain't "Stay classy."

Re: We're winning 45-0 versus the Chargers
After reading this, I went and told the woman that I work with (she's a Charger's fan), "yeah, you all are toast...there's no chance for you all to win". She asked why, so I told her about Styx and Bettis, and she said, "Yeah, we're done!" I'm so excited...too bad they probably won't show it on TV...but I'll know, anyway!
GO STEELERS!!!!Comment
