"We Do Not Seek Comfort... from non-Steelers.."

I can't say I disagree with Tomlin's comment. If you are buying used car, do you rely on the opinions of others, or do you do your own research before buying?

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Has His Research Called Into Question

Story by Zak Smith, Steeler Nation ? 12h

The Pittsburgh Steelers have concluded their 2024 training camp, and will now begin to shift their focus towards their Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on September 8th. Before the black and gold can play the games that matter, however, they must continue to move through preseason activities. Ahead of their matchup in the second week against the Buffalo Bills, all eyes look towards Russell Wilson, who is scheduled for his first live action as a member of the Steelers.

Wilson, a former Super Bowl champion, has been one of the highlight signings of the Steelers' offseason. Coming off a tough stint with the Denver Broncos, he looked forward to having a chance to win another ring in Pittsburgh.
Despite a strong start to his tenure during the teams Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and offseason workouts, Wilson has been unable to participate in most of training camp due to a calf injury. With Justin Fields having a strong camp, questions have been asked about Wilson's ability to make an impact in 2024.

No one would know this answer more than Sean Payton, who coached Wilson in Denver in 2023. Wilson rebounded under Payton, but never reached that full potential. In an interview with ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, Head Coach Mike Tomlin was asked if he received any knowledge of Wilson's ability and energy from his former head coach.

"I did not, It's my job and our job to determine that. It's just Steelers conducting Steelers business, man. We information gather. We do our appropriate research, and we make decisions and we don't look back. We don't seek comfort from the opinion of others that are non-Steelers, respectfully."

Tomlin, who has coached the Steelers since 2007, has always kept his cards close to his chest. The Steelers as an organization pride themselves on doing things their way. It's a direction that has worked well in the past, but has been called into question as the team has seemingly struggled adapting to the new-age NFL. Under General Manager Omar Khan, the Steelers have begun to re-invent the 'Steeler Way', while holding these foundational beliefs true.

Both Khan and Tomlin have been thorough towards player research and acquisition, and Wilson's signing is no exception. As Wilson was targeted early in the process, the Steelers clearly had a vision with what they expect from him. Questioning the ability of an aging veteran who has yet to see time on the field is valid, but rest assured that the Steelers have made this move with a purpose.

Steelers Following 'Steeler Way' Could Hold Team Back
Following the path set ahead of them, the tradition of the Steelers has been a foundational piece towards the teams success. Both Tomlin and former Head Coach Bill Cowher won championships following the model, and ensuring that the "Standard is the Standard.

When it comes to acquiring players via the draft or free agency, you'll see Tomlin specifically develop close bonds with coaches and players in attendance. Often times, even if the team doesn't draft said player, they can still join Tomlin later in their career.

All these factors of relationship building, lead to research and study. To build a team means to know your strengths and weaknesses, and learn your players strengths and weaknesses. Research entails watching tape and making your own assumptions, but receiving quality opinions is another great way to check all your boxes.

Payton, a Super Bowl champion himself, is a quality source who would have great information surrounding his former quarterback. He was likely heavily involved in the decision to release Wilson earlier this offseason. Though the two may be rivals, the camaraderie of being in the league as long as the two have been would certainly stand out in asking questions about players.

Trusting your staff and information is great, and has led to the Steelers finding several hidden gems over the years. But the team must be careful in ensuring that confidence doesn't shift towards arrogance. Tomlin and the Steelers have been blessed to have the teams tradition over the years, but knowing when to tweak certain traditions can be the difference between being the best or the worst in the league of others that are non-Steelers, respectfully.

This is pretty arrogant and IMO, why you don't want defensive coaches picking and setting the pecking order of QBs. Cowherd has been very vocal about this over the years and I think he's dead on.

The used car analogy only works if you're talking about the car salesman's opinion. This car was abandoned and Tomlin doesn't want to know from the previous owner or two why that was?

Nix was announced the starter in Denver...let's just say for Tomlin's sake that Russ had better outplay Nix -- in week 2 and all year -- or this will come back to haunt Tomlin.

How is Wilson's performance tied to Nix? Why would the selection haunt Tomlin as opposed to Khan/Weidl? He was drafted 8 picks before the Steelers were on the clock. The Steelers would have had to jump ahead of the Broncos to a team wanting to deal, which may have meant jumping to 9 or 8. That would have required a haul at least as big as the Bush trade, and I don't think anyone wanted that. I think Tomlin deserves plenty of blame for the QB position. I hated the way that Kenny was brought along, someone should have recognized that Rudolph was the best option, and the Canada hiring and retention was awful. But putting it on Tomlin if Bo Nix is successful in Denver? I can't see that at all.

I'm not saying the Steelers should have traded up for Nix, although they've recently traded up for linebackers and offensive tackles, but the coach who dumped Wilson and whose opinion they blithely reject just picked a QB who is shining in camp.

When asked recently what sold him on Nix, Peyton said his elite processing ability.

That's a weakness of both of our QBs, something that isn't apparently valued here. Maybe Tomlin believes that Ben's improvisational way is the best way in today's game.

If Nix succeeds and Wilson/Fields flops, it's going to blow back on Tomlin, or at least it should.

Tomlin has created a country club atmosphere for a group of multi-millionaires. Fans are not members. All they have to do is be somewhat competitive but there is no fire to achieve a championship or be an elite team in the league. Mr. Rooney has rewarded failure, so the country club is open. That's why players want to play here.... not to become champions but to be in Tomlin's country club. The Steelers will not become an elite team again until Tomlin is gone.

Really Tomlin? What about next years free agents?
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

All this hysteria and it's preseason. As a great philosopher once said, " it's practice man, we're talking about practice".

Let's wait until 6 games in and then start the hysterics.

Players want to come here and play on the cheap because its a country club?

Did you not see where players ranked the team in terms of facilities and quality?

Who said anything about playing on the cheap? They're getting paid millions. Mike Tomlin lucked out with an early Super Bowl win and the team has gone downhill since. Tomlin has job security and no fire in his belly to win a SB. He knows all he has to do is provide entertainment to fill the seats, and he lacks the ability to put a team together to be an elite team
