Time to get rid of Pat Meyer

Jones looks lost in his 2nd year (remember this theme), Frazier is only playing because Herbig got hurt, Fautanu was struggling before he got hurt. Maybe they just need time to develop, right?

How has he done with guys from other teams?

PFF grades the last three years:

    Daniels: 71.8 (Bears), 66.9, 62.1
    Cole: 69.7 (Vikings), 67.1, 57.3
    Seaumalo: 74.8 (Eagles), 75.2 (Eagles), 71.9

The longer they're in the system, the worse they get. The trends say Seaumalo will drop even more in his second year in the system.

Dotson did NOT get worse under Meyer, but took off once he got away from him. We'll go back to 2020, so the 3rd grade is Meyer's first year.

    Doston: 66.2, 64.5, 65.4, 85.2 (Rams)

How about everyone's favorite underdog scrapper? Wow, look how Meyer turned him around! Until the bottom fell out in year 2.

    Moore: 57.8, 62.4, 51.8

As posted in another thread, here are the PFF OL rankings every year Pat Meyer has been an NFL OL coach. He's the weak link on the coaching staff, the Matt Canada of position coaches, and it's a fatal flaw for this team.

    2017 (LAC) - 24th
    2018 (LAC) - 30th
    2019 (LAC) - 29th
    2020 (CAR) - 18th
    2021 (CAR) - 31st
    2022 (PIT) - 16th
2023 (PIT) - No data available

A poster on another board got it right:
"Really most are only interested in placing blame. Not playing or not playing where I want? Tomlin's fault fire him. Poor form? Meyer's fault fire him and fire Tomlin who hired him while you are at it. Player is just a failure? If we get there will they blame Khan or we going to hear the "Tomlin picks the players" statement and add that to the list of reasons Tomlin should be fired?"

People love to bring up Munchak as some great example of an OL coach. I won't say he wasn't good, but he did walk into an OL that had an all-pro center, a seasoned LG and RT, and no rookies that were consider 'raw'.

Jones needs to put in the work to get better at RT because his hand usage will only lead to inconsistent blocking on the left as well. There is some positive light though. His footwork, which wasn't always consistent, has looked OK so far. He seems to get in the right position in pass blocking.

Fingers crossed that his arm issue isn't some season-long injury that will drag out his development. Year2 could be rough for him as defenders study his tape and attack his weaknesses.

EDIT: I think it was Tunch Ilkin who said athleticism will only get you so far in the NFL. If you don't become a master of technique you will never be more average.

I agree that the players need to be putting in the work, but when you see the trends we've seen over the past few years with our OL, you also have to look at the coaching, I think. How can a Kevin Dotson go to another team and quickly become an all-pro after looking as bad as he looked w the Steelers? That can't be all on the player "putting in the work." There was coaching involved, too.

        Same thing every year..

OL starts out ugly and then gels around the bye week. We need to stop playing musical chairs and put Jones at LT and let them fight for the RT position.
        Steelers 27
        Rats 16

Everything WindyCitySteel said above is true. Meyer should be fired as should the HC for keeping these lousy coaches around for too long. See Matt Canada as an example.

One of the problems as well is where is the Ramon Foster? The Doug Legursky?

Will Spencer Anderson be coached up to contribute? Will Frazier be coached up to exceed expectations?

When one player falls short of expectations, it can be any number of things - the player, his attitude, the coaching, the system, the surrounding talent etc.

When no players exceed expectations out of a larger sample size, it will often come down to either talent evaluation or coaching.

That is pretty harsh. To really move the needle, get rid of Mike Tomllin.

Eight years and counting for our last playoff win.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***
