Change In HC Coming in 2025?

Very unusual moves thus far this season; one year QB room rental, no extension for Tomlin in sight, declining Harris' 5th year option, no reworking of Watt's or Heyward's contract, and a current projection of $60M+ under the cap.

Is the org setting the stage for a new HC in 2025?

I alluded to this in another thread -- they're making a lot of "all-in in 2024" type moves, if this fizzles out the next Rooney presser he'll be telling us...

I'm going to bet the streak here.

Rooney said it would get done, didn't he? I think previous extensions were signed April/May timeframe. So if we get to June, maybe there will be something more to this.

Why do you think we would restructure Watt's contract? If you restructure guys, you want to do it with players who have a bunch of term left. If we moved some of Watt's $21MM salary this year, we can only push it into next year. That's why we restructured Highsmith (he has 3 years left after this season).

I'm surprised that we haven't done a no new money extension with Heyward. But maybe we're trying to hold off on that. I think we'll still have to restructure at least one more contract before we get to the season. Heyward makes sense on a no new money extension (maybe with dummy years?). Minkah makes sense too.

My guess is that Watt would want to wait another year before signing an extension. Hoping that we get another "highest paid defensive player" contract signed before his. It was great that Kahn got Minkah to sign early in the offseason when he did his extension. Hopefully he can work that same Jedi mind trick on Watt.

You might be right that it ends up being Tomlin's last year. But I don't think the evidence you have here suggests it.

No need to restructure at the moment. The team has $16M right now in space. Likely will need about $5-7M to sign the rookie class and the Steelers usually carry about $5M into the season. A new FA signing would likely take the form of low first year number with (SB + first year vet min salary) and escalate next year. Unless there is a move to be made with a trade for a WR, no need to do anything right now.

I made a thread saying genius if it works, but if it fails its a wrap for Tomlin and some folks thought its just because of my bitterness over Kenny.

Regardless, all these moves scream WIN NOW not win in 2 or 3 years.

How long do folks think Tomlin can go without a playoff win before we move on or part ways? He’s already coached longer than Cowher and longer than most HC’s in the league. Carrol stepped down, Billicheat stepped down. Reid is still winning SB’s and Hairball is still winning playoff games.

In any previous season I would agree but this offseason feels different. Tomlin had more 'heat' on him last season than he has had since he started. So much so that they made a very rare change at OC in mid-season. And now trading away productive players because they've complained. A very different vibe coming from the org.

                We'll see.

I don't think they'll get rid of him. But he might want to leave (although I don't think there is currently strong evidence for that either).

I'd be OK with it if it happened, but I don't actively want it to happen.

I think it would probably make the team worse in the short term.

But that's probably the best way to get a good QB. Which is the most important thing to have.

Agreed. We clearing the books for 2025 and if this doesn’t work I see us making more serious moves next year.

Doesn't mean a firing, necessarily, I think there was something to the smoke last year about Tomlin maybe wanting a studio job for a year or two. If 2024 flops, does he really want to start over with a brand new QB again and defensive stars that are a year older?

I would agree with the win now approach. It seems all out in a manner that I have not seen.

Nobody has mentioned this but Art II will be 72 in 4 months. I have seen a younger Art out front for something. Maybe Art II is thinking of stepping away.

All this is possible. Remember- Rooney said that this new OC is all on Tomlin. His decision. So if it doesnt work, out we have a scape goat.

Also, IF they move all these guys around up front, with basically 3 new positions, there is going to be a learning curve on OL, and theres a possibility it won't work out.

Personally, I'd keep the OL as-is with the new C, if he can start. Its the best chance for success in 2024. We shall see.

Thanks for weighing in, Mr. Moore, but your son should probably be updating his resume.

Things are signalling his exit. About time.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:
