This will likely be a very unpopular opinion. But the more I look into Mims the more I do not want the Steelers to draft him. How is it even possible that a freak of nature like Mims at 6 foot 7 almost 350 bills with suddenness and athleticism make it to 20? Well, the guy has only really started 6 games. Even though he was a 5 start prospect out of high school he didnt get the look until 2023, spending 21/22 on the bench. When he does get to start he pulls up lame due to ankle injury. When he runs the 40 at the combine?hammy. I realize injuries happen. But he is very inexperienced, oft injured and for me in the first? Too much of a risk. I agree his ceiling is Pro Bowler. Hes an absolute freak. But it?s all potential and I couldnt pull the trigger on a first with that history. You need as close as a sure fire home run pick in that slot. And hes not that.
My case against Mims

Theoretically I would agree with you. But no quality RT drop to me in round 2. You either reach for a RT or a Center. I mean you could draft in the third out of ND or Paul out of Houston. But apparently the Cowboys love Paul and will likely reach in the second for him. I think it will be difficult to get a starter at both C and RT so we will need to take our pick between the two. You could draft a quality OT in the first if one falls and reach for Pran in the second. He can start day 1. Thats about the only solution. Personally, I would say F OT. Grab JPJ, then Cooper, or a top DB that falls like a TJ Tampa.Trolls are people too.Comment

The more I've looked at Mims, the more uncertainty has crept in. Too much time to wait can be a bad thing. This will likely be a very unpopular opinion. Dan Moore is a fatal flaw to building a championship caliber team. If he starts, it's like trying to climb Everest without a winter coat.Theoretically I would agree with you. I love Latham but actually have a lower grade on Fuaga. Fuaga is a mean man but lacks elite technique. I wouldnt hesitate to draft him but do like Latham better. Trading up for Frazier…yeah I like that move but you need a dance partner and at what cost? We have other needs outside of OL. Personally, I would rather grab Latham, and see who falls to us in the second. If Cooper or Tampa isnt there, slide back, grab a couple more picks and get Pran. Let put a name on peoples radar who for unknown reasons keeps mocking to me late. Tanor Bortilini. Technician, smart, and a savvy OLman who can play C and Guard.Trolls are people too.Comment

I'd be real hesitant about drafting a guy who hasn't shown much on the field
if you can find someone who's got great athleticism + proven production, that's best-case, but otherwise, I'll take the player who has shown out (at a significant level of competition) over the dude who hasn't.Comment

I agree that I'd take Latham over Mims, if he fell. But if he didn't and Mims is on the board, then I'm still taking him. I'm quite sure the Steelers medical team has looked closely at Mims. So, if he is the pick at 20, then I don't think the rest of us should be overly concerned.
I also like the idea of trading up in the second round for Frazier. The 2nd 3rd rounder the team got for Pickett would get us to pick 41 or 42.sigpic

The reality is we need a CB and a Center. Despite what everyone thinks of Dan Moore he has played LT for 3 years. I just don't think the Steelers are thinking OT in the first.
Good CBS will fall in this draft with the QBS and WRS going high. I believe we will get the BPA at the position we need.
I would not be surprised if we take a Center at #20. The Cowboys are drafting at #25 and they lost their Center to FA and they take Centers in the 1st Round if they need them.Comment

When you watch Mims his tech is good. Hand placement n punch is good. Arm length keeps defenders from getting to his chest and he can ride wide on the arc. Sinks his hips well enough so he is not getting bull rushed. He has above ave feet for a big man. You may have a hard time finding much tape where he was on the ground. If he keeps his pad level low you could have a stud RT.
So the question is not the games he played or the players he went against. He can play. His limited tape and some injury concerns are legit concerns for sure. So he is a gamble on greatness. Is taking another T the prudent move? Khan I trust will do his homework. There are going to be other tackles on the board at 20 along with a really good corner or two and a possible plug n play center.
Lastly we may not stay at 20. New sheriff in town now so we could make a move like we saw in 23. Even a move back is not out of the question.
Intrigue always surrounds the draft.Comment
