The Cook Index is a fun name for a simple way to measure how much teams are embracing a decades-long shift toward the passing game amid increased awareness of its benefits on early downs especially. To calculate it, we simply measure how frequently teams pass the ball on first and second downs in the first 28 minutes of regulation, before time remaining and score differential influence run-pass tendencies.
Last season, the Broncos had the seventh-lowest cook rate in the league. When they did pass the ball, Wilson was a binary passer. If his first read wasn?t open, he went to his checkdown right away. The Broncos led the league in running back receptions and receiving yardage last season. Wilson rarely attempted to get deeper into his progressions.
His job was to take care of the ball at all costs, but on third downs he was allowed to create, and that?s when we saw from time to time some of that old Wilson magic. He lost some weight before last season and it noticeably helped his mobility. He?ll never be the Wilson of old again, but he was elusive enough to create plays at a more consistent level. This formula of running the ball, a simplified passing game with an emphasis on limiting turnovers and a sprinkle of Wilson magic worked for the Broncos offense to a degree.
