Steelers Show Interest in Ladd McConkey, Brock Bowers at Georgia Pro Day

The Pittsburgh Steelers showed plenty of interest in Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey and tight end Brock Bowers at Pro Day.

    March 13, 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers sent a hefty contingent to Georgia's pro day on Wednesday. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, general manager Omar Khan, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, and defensive coordinator Teryl Austin all made the trip, according to Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy.

And while Amarius Mims did not work out due to injury, there were two players whom the Steelers were caught seemingly having their eye on. For one, wide receiver Ladd McConkey was thoroughly scouted by Mike Tomlin throughout the day. Tomlin closely watched McConkey go through his drills, a sign of his interest in a player at pro days. All of that occurred while Tomlin spent most of the day talking to Georgia head coach Kirby Smart.

Meanwhile, Smith talked at length to tight end Brock Bowers. While the Steelers do not need a tight end, Bowers is the player who could signify the team filling their void at wide receiver with another tight end instead. But that seems unlikely. Still, the presence of Tomlin and the rest of the big brass around this pro day is not unexpected, but it's notable. The Steelers seem set to target at least one Georgia player, with Mims leading the way, but McConkey and Sedrick Van-Pran Granger are also high up on that list.

Mims stated that he did meet formally with the Pittsburgh brass in Indianapolis before declaring himself 100% for the testing portion of the combine. On Sunday, he was in the process of putting up some gaudy testing numbers before a minor hamstring tweak, forcing him to cut his workout short without completing the agility tests. For obvious reasons, there has been a lot of discussion in Pittsburgh recently about offensive linemen having to switch sides or positions as a whole. Mims isn?t concerned about it.

On top of that, defensive backs Tykee Smith, Kamari Lassiter, and Javon Bullard headline the defensive group, with Teryl Austin there on looking.

Bowers is projected to be drafted in the top 10, some mocks have him in the top 5.

    We won’t sniff him.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

Just a hunch but we could use a tackle a wr and a center. Bulldogs seem to line up rather well.

Just read a write up that claims Bowers could become "the best TE in league history". Wow.

He is a beast. Never seen a TE like that in college. Catches everything and the guy is huge. No way he makes it past 10.

Would be a welcome target for Malik Willis!

                  Mims & Van Pran-Granger in #1 & #2?

                  Upgrades that OL quickly....
The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

I'd prefer JPJ and the best tackle available in round 2. You don't need two 1st round picks at tackle, and JPJ might be a generational player.

Only downside is he is 6'3" versus 6'5"

                        March 13, 2024 -

Full house at UGA pro day … All 32 teams were represented at today’s Georgia pro day including Pittsburgh and Tennessee which both had both their GM and head coach in town. In fact, the Pittsburgh delegation also included both their offensive and defensive co-ordinators, while Las Vegas head coach Antonio Pierce was also there. Unfortunately, no one got to see star TE Brock Bowers work out as he sat out with a minor hamstring injury and hopes to finally work out for pro scouts at a private workout on April 10th. Same story for hulking OT Amarius Mims who will also workout on April 10th. One player who did work out today was CB Kamari Lassiter, who had been considered to be a possible mid-second round prospect, but was only able to run in the 4.60-4.65 range for the 40 which is not fast at all for the position. At the same time, WR Ladd McConkey continued to impress with his quickness. Indeed, McConkey who posted an explosive combine 40 time of 4.39 completed the short shuttle today in 4.04 seconds while timing 6.72 in the 3-cone drill, both of which would have been among the 5 fastest times of any position at last month’s combine.

Van Pran was measured at 6'4" at the combine with short 31 3/8" T-rex arms.
