Russ wants a chance for another ring and:
S-T-A-B-I-L-I-T-Y.
Won't get that many other places.
He wants to play 5 mores years and hoist 2 more Lombardis. Time will tell.
I love the signing because EVEN IF IT FAILS

I wonder.
We've been good at not pushing Watt's cap hit down the road. And there might be some things we can do to reduce Cam's hit for next season.
If Wilson balls out, I don't think you let above average QBs go if you think you can win. And maybe he doesn't go full market value if he has success here at a low number?
Russ was in the room with Khan and Tomlin for HOURS for a reason people.
Would not surprise AT ALL if Russ told them if he succeeds he WANTS to get another ring more than maximizing his money.
I said it before. Russ joins us ONLY if he sees us as his best opportunity to WIN.
I think he (like some of us) have visions of his early success as a solid game manager of a hard running defensive team.Leave a comment:

I don't think Kenny can win the job to be QB1 to start the season. This will be another faux competition in camp.
It's Russ' job to lose. And he would have to outright stink in preseason to lose it. Or get injured.
Wilson is QB1 on day 1. From there, it's anyone's guess on how short a leash he might operate on.Leave a comment:

In the unlikely case that Russ struggles bench him at midsession. Kenny will have enough time to show whether he is worth keeping with a new OC.
If Russ is significantly better as I suspect, extend him. He WILL NOT be near as valuable on the open market as he cannot carry a bad team. Last season Russ is a huge improvement for us but not a savior for a bad team anymore.
Cam gets ONE SEASON to get his ring. If we fail, but Russ gets us deep into the playoffs? Having just got paid, Russ goal is to cement his legacy with another ring.
Cutting Cam gets Russ paid easy.
I could see us have SEVERAL YEARS to get a ring with Russ that way.Last edited by Captain Lemming; 03-11-2024, 11:47 AM.Leave a comment:

Saying it again. Last season, old man Russ had more touchdown passes than OUR TEAM HAS HAD since Ben retired.
That is DESPITE being SAT for TWO GAMES.
That is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade to a 10 win playoff team. And he did not have NEAR the weapons he has now to play with.Leave a comment:

You think we'll have Wilson on board for 3 years? Interesting.
If he has a good season, I don't see the Steelers paying what he will demand for his next contract. If he has a bad season, I don't see the Steelers keeping him on. I think this is a one-year rental.
We shall see.

That's your intepretation. Albert Breer had this to say:
"The Steelers' one-year deal with signing Russell Wilson is, as expected, at the $1.21 million league minimum, per sources. Pittsburgh was very clear setting expectations with Wilson on his visit. He knows what it is. He'll come in and compete."
Now having said this, I would be mildly shocked if Pickett outplays Wilson for the start. It would tell me that Wilson has fallen off a lot more than people realize.
So he should look good or better then KP in the new system.Leave a comment:

Just like he was still QB1 when Mason had "the hot hand".
We'll see though.Leave a comment:

you all can say what you want but at the end of the day if Russell Wilson can replicate what he did last year statistically here in Pittsburgh 66.4% completion percentage 26 TDs and 8 ints ( double the amount of TD passes we had last year and less INTs ) that spells 3-4 more wins IMO and that changes the entire playoff picture ... football is about matchups so instead of playing the 1 or 2 seed you potentially are the 1 or 2 seed playing the 7 or 8th seed and at home ..... that likely roadmaps you into the conference championship game instead of 1 and done ....
we do not need superstar play at QB with the way our defense plays we just have to have a legit NFL QB who can make some plays ...Wilson can do that .....
for those saying its wasting KP , that is laughable what it is a waste is playing Pickett and letting the prime years of TJ and Minkah go by the way side and the final years of Cam go down the drain ... thats beyond wasteful that tragicLeave a comment:

I know some have the immediate instinct to look for the negative in everything, but there is no downside to this signing.
I mentioned in another thread that I think the front office rightly sees that we have a three (3) year window before Watt, Minkah and others start to fade. They aren't willing to wait until Pickett "gets it". Just looking at last season, Wilson is 10x better than Pickett. I love that the organization is saying win now. Just remember Art's comments after the season.
INn reality, this is more than a one year solution unless Wilson falls apart. This is a "prove it" but likely he has at least three good years in him.
I do have some concerns about being a good teammate and stuff. But we can cut him for basically no downside if we want. And that if that happens, it might almost end his career. So he has to be motivated to come in and kick ass.Leave a comment:

He's not clearly better than any other QB in this division; we still might have 3 teams ahead of us in that dept (2 anyway). Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this move significantly helping our record this season, and it sure doesn't seem to be anything that will improve us long-term.

dream on ........
They didnt bring Wilson in to compete with Kenny , they brought Wilson in to be QB1 , Kenny was / is a bust , the team and its players have no confidence in his ability to lead this team hence why he sat the bench late last year while healthy .... Pickett never should have been a 1st round pick ( I said that in real time back then )

Wilson is what Trubisky was supposed to be, a bridge QB that could win games until Pickett is ready to make the leap (or fail).
And if Pickett balls out in preseason and wins the job outright, then the Steelers have the best backup in the division.
The Steelers have been consistent in how they view the QB situation:
"view Kenny as a QB1, but will need to compete"
"will bring in a veteran with experience"
"expect this is a big season for Kenny"
The moves they made haven't changed their position. It's outside the org that people are interpreting this as something negative for KP. You have to applaud the org for meeting these expectations in the least expensive manner possible.

Its 1.2 Mill. Any team would be a fool not to give him a chance at the vet minimum.Leave a comment:
