I think drafting players is hard. It's like picking stocks. I'm not sure anyone is actually good at it in the long term. Particularly when you get into the mid-to-late rounds.
I agree it's not easy picking the right players and sometime good fortune is needed to look smart and be successful. Sample size on Khan n staff is small but like what we saw a year back.

That Philly D was trash this year.

I think its moreso SB hangover or losing the DC and OC last year but we shall see.

If it continues next year, the SB year might be a one off.

I don't think that this article makes sense because it takes three different situations and wraps it up as a "Steelers' evaluation" problem.

Dotson - looked very good as a rook when he subbed in at his natural RG position. Looked inconsistent (I think I was kinder to him than most were) when playing LG. I always thought he was unfairly labelled and that his good reps could be dominant at times while his bad reps were awful. I don't think his issue was evaluation, I think it was him playing out of position. The combined mistake was the signing of Trea Turner, a RG only (Colbert). This move is more on the coaches than the evaluation.

Green - A combination of bad evaluation and awful timing. He was a project C, and that's putting it kindly. The bigger issue was drafting that project the same year you needed him to start. I could accept that move if it had been done a year or two earlier, with an eye towards him taking over after Pouncey retired. It was an unacceptable move to make as a plan A for that season, and that goes entirely on Colbert - both evaluation and philosophy.

Leal - I think the evaluation problem here is more about drafting a guy whose talent level is there but likely won't fit in what your defense does. TBH I am not as bothered by this one as the first two. You took a swing and a miss on a player whose abilities warranted it. Whether it was coaching or scheme (you can't change an entire scheme to fit a third round pick) it was a miss. You can live with those. A third round hit was a small school guy in Highsmith. You take your chances and sometimes they pay off.

Steelers have an evaluation problem when it comes to selecting OCs

Rooney told us why that is -- Tomlin is the one making the decision

And since it is NOT Shanahan- it’s he is not lying.

(I believed all along it would be Tomlins call but it is hilarious of how we believe Rooney (Tomlins hiring this dude) but don’t believe Rooney (Tomlins firing Canada) when we approve.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

look, I've believed all along the coordinator choices have been Tomlin's call (well at least for the past decade or so) ... I've taken some flak for that position
I think Tomlin fired BA, chose to hire (then fire) Haley, chose to hire (then fire) Fichtner, chose to hire (then fire) Canada, and today, chose Smith. I've believed what Tomlin said about those decisions; never did think Rooney had that much input in them.
