    Wk11: "Wide Ass Open"

JTOS breaks down offense against the Browns. Has some choice comments on a number of players including:
    • Moore - the sack on Pickett to start the game; where was Moore's head with his blocking assignment?
    • Pickens' lazy route running
    • DJ's unacceptable response to a failed pass
    • Pickett's poor decision making; "struggling to see the field"
    • Attention to detail is lacking in many cases
    • "preseason wk1 install" on offense

"Tangible evidence things are not working"

Why would Pickett not throw the ball to DJ here??

Just started a Faulkner thread about communication and attention to detail. These problems didn't start with Canada. There is a systemic coaching problem in Pittsburgh.

I like watching this guy's videos but man, it's depressing listening to him talk about our simplistic offense that's rarely on the same page with each other. How can an offense be BOTH simplistic (Friday night/pre-season stuff as he calls it) AND also having players not on the same page with each other and Kenny not knowing where to go with the ball?

We should hire this guy as a consultant. It feels like we're severely lacking in offensive intelligence.

Man, I know Kenny did poorly on his wonder lick test ( 17 ) which is very low, but I wonder if something is neurologically wrong with him ( from hitting his head ) or if the man has poor vision and it needs to be corrected. He is missing targeting wide open players.

Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

You are bringing up probably the most disturbing thing in all of this. "Simple" and yet struggling to even execute these basic concepts. I don't care what the defense is doing. If a receiver can't run a crisp route, or the correct one then they need to sit until they learn it. And I wonder how much the QB is getting called out in team film reviews? Seems his name should pop up quite a bit.

Tomlin is on record saying Pickett is the starting QB for the rest of the season but is that really smart if Pickett continues to slide?

No way should Tomlin say this. He has backed himself into a corner. How stupid of him.

Rookies, and 2nd year players who are staring at quarterback are better than him. About 5-7 of them are. Maybe Pickett is better than Rookie Young....maybe.

You're taking his words too seriously, I think. I think Tomlin said that to avoid further damage to Kenny's psyche.

He's not backed into a corner. He can still bench Kenny any time he wants and can justify it saying that Kenny didn't live up to the expectation that was part of remaining the starter for the rest of the season.

And IMO, what would be the point of benching Kenny this season anyway? We know that neither Mitch nor Rudolph are the future at the position for us. So, I'd put all my focus and energy into trying to fix Kenny now, and if we don't see significant improvement by the end of the season, it's time to find someone to compete with him in the next camp. I see no point in having both Mitch and Rudolph on the same team. They're both decent enough backup QBs. We need a battle for QB1 in camp until it's been decided that we have our franchise QB.

I don't think it has anything to do with his wonderlic score. I think he has the yips. He feels pressure before it's an issue. He's leading an offense that is one of the very worst. His receivers are pissed off and/or in diva mode. It's all a lot of pressure for a rookie QB, especially one going from Pitt to the Steelers and taking over for a hall of fame QB. Expectations were/are very high and we paired him with maybe the worst offensive coordinator in the league. And then fired him. It's an offensive disaster that will be difficult to overcome but firing Canada had to happen to start the process.

But Pickett isn't a rookie. He has started 20+ games and been awful lately. His play has gone from below average to the worst in the NFL for the past three games.

He is playing as if something is not right cognitively or visually. Someone needs to get him checked out, and if the Steelers swept a concussion under the rug, shame on them.

He did not look normal when he attempted a QB sneak and his helmet can off. He looked dazed to me.

If only the media did their job and demanded some answers.

This is absolutely the problem. Tomlin is not an O guy, only wants to limit TOs. All the assistants are his guys. This is why you would expect when they basically mail in the offensive plan.

Also, good point about how our guys still can't execute simple. Batch said in the postgame last week that guys who aren't the first option are jogging out their routes.

no he hasn?t. Coaches say this all the time.

What he is really trying to do is get the media to stop asking him the same question over and over.

coaches will say a job is safe and then 2 weeks later make a move.
