He plays well when he plays with what I call " utter abandon". He's up against it and he does well. That's why I think it's got something to do with the control he plays under early on.
It doesn't make sense to me. That's why I think the OC is holding him back.Comment

Two Steelers starting QBs that somehow rise in the 4th qtrs. One was allowed to call his own plays, the other not. The constant here is Canada. The narrative of going off script doesn't work this season.Comment

That pass to DJ on 3rd down was great, looked like some of the passes he made his rookie year.Comment

OC is definitely holding him back, it makes no sense that somehow he just magically gets more productive in the 4th quarter. I think him coming through in the clutch is very encouraging, it's an intangible trait that a QB either has or doesn't and it looks like he has it, it's one of the defining characteristics of a championship QB. But for him to not be as productive the rest of the game is clearly by design or mishap whatever you want to call it lol.

This was Pickett best game. Of course he is making a back shoulder throw and using Pickens talent as a go to play. Of course TJ Watt interception gave the offense 7 yards to and to go for a touch down. And of course the ref were favorable to on a spot for us. Tomlin returned the favor with a stupid red flag that everyone could see the receivers was in.
We are lucky to have TJ Watt his amazing play that nearly went for six. And a receiver like Pickens. We are lucky Pickett was not intercepted in a play were two Rams defenders played volley ball. But yeah Pickett did the job and played well in the second half.Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.
Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.
*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***Comment

wish I could put a finger on just why the team is able to find success in the 4th quarter as opposed to offensive futility in the first 3. Maybe it's a cumulative effect of the gameplan simply wearing down the opposition until things finally break open. I will say that as the game progressed yesterday there was only one play call I was furious at - the toss to Najee on first and goal after the TJ pick. He just doesn't have the wheels for speed around he edges, so I thought that was a ridiculous selection. That being said, I don't have any other moments where I was questioning the play calling itself.
Now that doesn't mean all is suddenly solved. It's still baffling to me how the team struggles to execute basic run blocks throughout the game, how they can't put a handful of boring 4-5 yard gains together in a row. I still don't think multiple 3 and outs with the occasional splash play to keep it close and then close it out in the 4th is a formula for long term success.
But damn if they aren't 4-2 and in first place. I just hope it's not a repeat of the 11-0 first place we had a few seasons ago before the wheels finally fell off culminating in a playoff loss in the first round to Cleveland of all teams. But rather than focus on all the reasons why they could have lost yesterday, I'm going to enjoy the monday talk shows and celebrate the great plays that allowed them to win.
First place is a fine way to wake up on Monday.
But I suspect Pittsburgh Dad is gonna be epic this week.......2014 MNF EXEC CHAMPION!!!Comment

would be nice to get a lead and keep it but rewatching the game, the Watt offsides was bull. He was lined up the same way on the previous play. I think we were headed for more points if we got that 3 and out.Steelers 27

winning close games while the offense improves week to week is a good formula. I think it will pay off in the end because most NFL games are close.

I'm not sure the offense has improved, it looked like the normal MO of this offense. Look lost (particularly Pickett) for 3 quarters and then play like an All-Pro at crunch time. If, when, the offense is moving the ball in the first half then I'll say there is improvement. First half: 5 drives, 4 punts and FG. Second half: 5 drives, 3 scores and run out the clock with an 11 play drive, 1 punt

Which is an improvement from the 4th quarter.Steelers 27
