    Back to Old Habits

Apparently short MOF is again verboten. The route tree is about as conservative as you can get. Something smells with this offense...

    Hey Matt Canada;

    Reminder....

"I'm a part of the process," Tomlin said. "When you're part of the process, it's less troublesome to you."

I think he knows it, but fashions himself a "stubborn genius".
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

Quit blaming Canada. It’s player execution.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

That's a legit reason except for one glaring fact. The player execution on offense has been lacking for multiple players, multiple QBs, and multiple seasons. That is when you have to start looking at who is teaching the execution.

Why can you(certain fans) use that excuse for Tomlin but not Canada?

I don't excuse either one. They are both failing at it.

Yes, my question wasn’t directly asked to you.
I’m simply waiting for a Tomlin fan to explain it to me(us).

Follow my reasoning here: Wasn't the perception that the defense was great because LeBeau was back there. It had little to do with Tomlin. I guess I'm thinking the coordinators do the play design and calling. Succeed or fail it's LeBeau/Haley/Canada. I don't know this, but that's how I see the dynamic playing out in most (not all) cases around the league.

Even still, if you're the boss who isn't as involved in the details -- a CEO would fire an underqualified VP, right? It just seems like Tomlin's not seeing this as well as the rest of the world, for whatever reason.

Frankly, the biggest problem I see is I'm unsure if there's a guy that's qualified to be an OC who is presently on the staff

Agree with much of this. I think that the coordinator's job is to develop a system, hopefully adjustable to the talents of his players, and together with the HC come up with a gameplan each week. The GM is to get or remove the players who will or won't fit a coordinator's system. The position coaches are to coach up the individual players within a position group to play the game properly, and the way they want them to.

The head coach is in between everyone, making sure that everything runs smoothly and that on field personnel are doing their job and communicating what they need to do, and also make the bigger gameday decisions like going for it on fourth, or turning up defensive agression etc. My biggest issue with Tomlin currently is that there is a failing offensive system with no changes. 3 bad games and one pretty good performance out of 4, and it takes a full on embarrassment to bring about change. I'm all for patience when it comes to the big organizational moves, but the on-field mechanics have to be constantly moving, and they aren't. This team hits the field week in and week out and expects to win playing the same game they played last week and the week before. No adjustments for opponent, no adjustments for his own team's strengths and weaknesses.

At this point, you can fire the OC, but that is window dressing. It would be like in politics making a senator or congressman resign to take focus off of a much larger presidential scandal (no politics, just a generic example).

There is a point you fail to grasp.

There are no TOMLIN fans. Just STEELER fans who root for the STEELER coach to succeed. If he were not coaching MY TEAM I would feel no desire to root for Tomlin at all.

I would suggest I fall into the category you are pointing the finger at.

I have not absolved Tomlin of responsibility. I said when all factors of the team is bad you’ve got to point to THE COACH.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

                      TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

Yep. Everything sucks on offense. And the HC matters here too. Particularly with the decision to keep him (or at least allow him to call plays).

Didn't KP also say he was pretty involved in the game planning? I thought I remembered stories after he'd started a few games about how open the Steelers were to having him be part of the process.

I agree that this is the part the HC owns. And from what we see on the field, I agree that there hasn't been any noticeable changes since Canada started.

There definitely are Tomlin fans here.
Case in point. You aren’t going to blame Tomlin for anything until ALL factors of the team are bad.
Well, that’s never going to be the case. There will always be positives you can find.
Hell, the 0-16 lions had bright spots on that team.

I think that when you see a simplistic offensive scheme that isn't working, you can blame the OC. When you continue to see the same scheme year after year, it goes beyond him, and you almost wonder if this is being instructed from above to keep it in. When Canada was hired, we heard about all the motion he likes to run. Someone recently posted that the Steelers run the least amount of motion of any team. Is it because Pickett and the rest can't handle too much? Is it because those above want to handcuff the O until they prove they can handle it? I don't know, but the more that this crap continues, the more I think the blame falls off of Canada, because allowing it to continue makes no sense.
