Dawand Jones looking good in Cleveland

Was hoping we'd double dip at tackle, but man, I love our draft and not sure who of Porter, Benton, or Washington I would have passed on to take him. Probably Benton, but I like that pick, too.

The Cleveland Browns were patient in the 2023 NFL draft and it has really paid off. Cleveland snatched up former Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones in the fourth round and he has easily been the best rookie offensive tackle in preseason. How good has he been?

    meh

supposedly he was off our board and if thats the case i sure other teams did too. he certainly didn't make himself loved after dominating in senior bowl practices.

how much time are the elite pass rushers playing in those pre season games anyway. i think he's highly susceptible to the speed rush. we'll see soon enough when the the real season starts n a couple of weeks

The Benton pic was a must pick; have been ignoring DT spot mostly since Shades/Colbert era has been going on. Even Hargrave wasn't a true NT for a 3-4. Shades/Colbert have been ignoring that vital position ever since they've been in charge, finally Kahn/Weidl are bringing NT back into attention.

Yeah it was a vital position for the 1992 Steelers. Dude it’s 2023.

Benton is WAY more Hargrave than Casey.
And THAT is a good thing.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

Agreed and yes it is. Having a 2 down 0,1 gap plug is 90s football. Its weakness is exposed when a team goes 4-5 wide no huddle. We have also debated this ad nauseam in the past.

              D. Jones might turn out great, but no way do I change any of our 1st several picks. needed them all.

It's not 4 or 5-wide, it's some team passing out of 12 or 13-personnel and exposing them at some point. Same argument can be made about Elandon Roberts, everyone seems to think that every team will dutifully run on 1st and 2nd down and then allow him to jog off the field.

im sure if you had athletic TEs that’s possible. But it’s more about keeping a fat winded NT on the field and spreading out the D trying to disguise blitzes. I think it has less to do with 12 or 13.

Yep. And I'd take Hargrave back in a NY minute if it was possible.

That's why getting Kwon Alexander was so important... when teams take advantage of that situation, you'll see Kwon getting more reps...

How many times have we see teams motion their #1 WR in 12 or 13 inside so Spillane or VDubs or some other slow footed run stopper has to cover him?

Well, on a first down pass Roberts can be VERY effective.
Steelers are CLEARLY playing the run, players bite on play action, Porter does not even drop back until it is clearly a pass.

                          Who makes the play?

There are TWO elements of pass defense. One does not involve coverage skills.
Roberts was EXTREMELY effective in the OTHER factor of pass defense last season.

That was a nice play against furniture movers. There will be times he'll be forced into coverage this season, probably as early as week 1 vs. the Niners.
