    8/2 camp report

Porter first player down the hill on just a real nice weather day here in Latrobe.
Cole 2nd guy I saw came down alone today.
Holcomb working some early sled drills. McCollum down early. Getting some extra stretching in.

Lots of drill work and special team work today.
DL working on punching out the ball and recovery it. Yeah punching at it. High school type drill BUT turnovers are important and most of the D Line did okay with it.

Danny Smith had the punt returners in this order... 89, 19, 16, 18, 14 n 84. All held their own today and without any wind all balls were caught. Byrd is real quick, not Austin quick, but close and he better be cause he is small. J Bradley looked okay out there and seeing a 84 on the field on the O brought back some AB thoughts. What could have been!!!!!

    7 shots-

8 qb pass comp to 22 in right flat for short gain .
8 qb comp to 14 on a drag with PP covering officials ruled 14 out of end zone but a nice grab.
8 qb Pickens open pass sails high inc.
8 qb Warren stuffed by Alexander on 2 hole run. 26 reads and reacts really quickly, No hesitation then all gas no brakes.
10 qb TD toss to Mount Washington on an out. High point catch made it look easy.
10 qb Gunner in slot runs a hook timing route perfect for a TD.
10 qb inc in flat , not sure what happened to MT here some quick pressure n it looked like he got 'happy feet" n flicked it off balance.

Team breaks into 4 groups. Special teams coverage for 2 groups. Some passing drills. Last group 1 on 1 TE vs backers.

    In 1 on 1 :
    80 mauls 48
    87 handles 45
45 bounces back n beats 87 with real nice rip under move.
    90 vs 88 call that a draw
    51 Herbig blows up 83.
they go again and same result Herbig to much for 83.
56 easily blows by 80 with push pull move. coaches talk to Washington
they go again... 80 puts 56 on skates and drives him out of frame. Nice recovery by the rookie.
83 beaten by 45 who just tossed Heyward to the dirt.
87 vs 48 will call it a draw
88 rides 51 wide staying on the block like a vet should.
90 vs 80 No contest 90 swim move blows past Washington. Welcome to the NFL rookie.

    11 on 11:

    Pistol formation about time:
8 qb Jet motion in the pistol n Harris on a 5 hole run stuffed by 56. No gain.
8 now under center 22 in single back set 7 hole toss ad even with a good block by Pickens only a few yards.
8 qb 2 hole run stuffed, inside we are not getting much of a bow.
8 qb protection is good and 18 makes a diving catch on the sidelines on a pass a bit low n outside. That extra work he did after practice yesterday helped.
10 qb Jones at LT. Warren 5 hole run but for just 3 yds.
10 qb For you Jones fans he pancakes Golden on a 7 hole run to his side but D closed down on Warren for no gain.
10 qb Jones n Washington pull left to right on 6 hole counter but play took to long to develop n no gain. Reminded me of Redskins old counter power with the hogs n Riggens running it. It needs work on our end but both rookies have good feet and obviously play with good leverage n a bit of nasty.
Muse in on that stop he read it quick before it could get turned up field, another LB who is a bit small but with quickness.
8 from the pistol with motion under and Picket hits Fitzpatrick on a perfect 20 yd in cut.
Spencer Anderson in on some of that sequence and he held his own out there.

    11 on 11-

8qb 18 on a quick out ball there and nice hand catch. Accurate passes n nice hand catches will move those chains. 33 Dawson decent coverage but not enough on this play.
8 qb Watt destroys the play ( note 90 is really good) knocking Chuks backwards 8 has to toss it away.
8 hits Robinson on short gainer with PP all over him in coverage. Good play all around.
8 passes to 18 on deep out but ball tipped away by Wallace who was sticky tight. Vet makes a good play.
8 complete to 19 on a 9 and to the house TD against Porter ... speed speed speed.
10 qb Jones at LT working with the 2's. 80 Washington in too .. Jones rides olb wide inc pass on an out as Pierre has good coverage.
10 qb pass complete to White on a slant good for 20 yds. Another nice hands catch. Robinson puts big smack on White n crowd gets loud.
10 qb pressure if live he goes down, rolls out takes off. Win by DL.
2 qb Fitzpatrick on a dig for 10 MR put it right on the $$$$.
2 qb 26 in jet motion , 13 runs a hook n complete for 10 but McFarland on a wheel wide open. MR not seeing the entire field.

8qb 30 at rb in 11 personnel 7 hole run Moore with good block and a good gain.
8 qb hits 22 in the flat for 10 yd gain.
10 qb hits 83 on a slant with Herbig in qb's face with a nice speed rush. 51 quick off the snap. Sometimes first defender moving. Good get off.
10 qb 1 hole run not sure who but Alexander blows it up. He is quick to read it and stick it.
10 qb 19 in motion on a wheel makes the catch and to the house. Speed , we have speed as Mickey once said.
10 qb hits 88 on a sluggo in stride just a sweet pass n catch right on target. Nice gain and a play we've seen a few times now over last 2 days.
2 qb hits Boykin on a dig nice pitch n catch for about 10 yds.
2 qb hits Boykin on 5 yard out. Who new he has decent hands.

    7 on 7 -
3rd and long called out by the coaches in this drill:
8 qb hits Robinson who gets belted by 33 but holds on. Passes by 8 today on the mark.
8 qb to 83 on a slant comp against 33 who was sticky tight in coverage but pass placed perfectly.
8 qb has time 3rd read is Harris in the flat for decent gain. That looked like KP8 we saw at the end of last season.
8 qb comp to 18 on deep out who had nice toe tap grab. Crowd got loud with approval. 18 showing off good hands.
8 hits 19 on a slant that was his 2nd read TD to the house. Pass on the $$$ n yac follows.

    11 on 11-
8 qb Dj complete on a drag another nice grab but got hit in a real bad spot. He was down for a minute but got to the sidelines.

10 qb match up had 51 vs 71 on live play ... rookie gets the edge n makes the play for no gain.
10 qb hits Boykin on an out. Short gain but who knew Boykin can catch like this.
10 qb inc to White on a 9 Porter in good not great coverage but Norwood in cover 2 late getting to the sideline.
Not sure who was in at qb but 25 takes a 7 hole run to the house showing good speed. Makes up for a few of those fumbles.
2 qb Rudolph off the mark inc to Boykin, Marshall with some pressure.
2 qb deep 9 to 85 inc overthrown
2 qb 4 hole run by Hagans and another long gainer. Herbig with a nice seal block inside to spring it.

    Post practice:
80 , 82 , 87, all with reps on jugs machine nice to see.

Fitzpatrick running extra routes with MR doing the passing. Good to see the extra reps by both these guys.
Boykin working on getting into n out of cuts quicker. Running a bunch of extra routes making the cuts as sharp as possible.
Seumalo working with Green on stoning one rusher then sliding off to help with another. Nice to see the vet sharing his knowledge.

Nice write up. Really appreciate this. Focusing on Jones at LT. I keep reading good things. I do not see Moore's name mentioned.

Austin is more than just a camp story, he is severing toast and scoring TD's.

I know, I know, only two practices in pads. But three good practice in a row and it's a trend. If you ask players how soon can they tell somebody will be good, they will tell you about three parctices.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

Well what has helped Austin n all the receivers is the accuracy of KP n MT. Weather ideal too so a lot goes into it , field in perfect shape so some slipping but not much. We need to see KP keep taking steps n he has spun it well enough.
Some of these rookies have held their own and perhaps a bit more so there are things to be positive about. Alexander looks to be a solid vet inside for us in an area where we needed help. Khan gets some kudos for that move.

Great post. I was at the same day of camp and you saw so much more than I did for sure

I like how you help fill in some of the details on drills / plays that I missed. Or focused on something different.

Kahn and Weidl gets mega kudos for me on most of their moves! The weather is the weather. The heat might gas the big guys more quickly ( health must be watched for all players , we should have our own ER guys , not the Latrobe ER guys. Rooney can you hear me ? ) but there is water and the cool zone ( which the Steelers should have ) for that. Both should be out there. Some changes that Art Rooney II can make. You don't screw around with a player health.

Our QB's are playing getter. They have had more time and a better OL to throw. But Austin is burning guys.. multiple good players. He is creating his own " heat " As I said he is serving toast. With Pickens in the field he will burn the 3rd or 4th cornerback on the opposing defense that are covering him in the games. I've almost seen enough of the man to tell he will be a key weapon in the sub packages.

Glad you got there. We see a lot but we miss a lot too. Things going on at the same time. Lots of special team work yesterday including that field goal session I didn't even write about that.

Great job again IC. Listening to SNR yesterday they commented that the Wednesday 'practice was generally very sloppy', i.e, dropped passes, fumbles, etc.

Maybe a minor amount of fatigue setting in after the adrenaline of the first few days wore off?

                    True that.

I thought it looked like fun where the 100s of kids were competing to catch FGs kicked into the crowd.

We walked by that section and it seemed like a rowdy tailgate over there

yup. We saw some good plays but Calvin, Darnell, DJ, and others had a lot of drops on easy balls.

even when the TEs were doing some of their own drills, Darnell had me wondering if he had hands at all.

there definitely were some guys half arsing it. But then there were others going 100% and really stood out yesterday.

Yeah some mistakes for sure , Hagans did fumble, Pickens pushed off badly on a stop route , false start here or there n some catchable balls that hit the ground. Some of that happens at every practice so it's never going to be perfectly clean. At least yesterday guys who did make obvious mistakes bounced back. Hagans with a few long runs, Pickens has caught everything n even tossed some good blocks downfield on run plays. He has looked very good.
We also see guys being moved into new positions like Moore took some reps at RT. So some vets being put in multiple positions n as such mistakes happen. Overall I would say it has looked above average as far as the overall performance but that is not saying much.

A Tomlin-led team functioning sloppy without discipline? You don't say? Sounds more like the Browns.
