    Camp Report 8/1

1:30 pm Cole n Green first players down the hill.

    No Minkah today.

    TE's on sled drill in order 88 , 81, 80 83 n 87
All worked the sleds well enough. Washington with real good explosion.

Tanner Morgan our basic camp arm is accurate but he can't spin it like the other 3 n his release is so so. Looked accurate enough in perfect conditions with no rush. he was not used in any team drills today so that tells us something.
    7 shots :
Single back set with Najee shot gun with 8 as qb. 1 hole run scores a TD.
Empty set then Warren motions into single back set 8 in gun, out route to 88 broken up by Peterson.
KP still in looking for 14 but inc he was held by Sullivan #34.
MT in at qb McFarland on a 2 gap dive stopped by Herbig.
MT inc to Gentry who turned inside n pass was thrown to outside shoulder. Not on same page.
MT still in, 1 hole dive by Hagans short of goal. Perales on the stop with great get off.
MT pressured rolls right could walk it in but tosses inc in right flat.

    Back on Backers:

    55 beats 22.
    56 beats 88
    54 beats 81
90 stoned by 80. Yeah rookie won that one.
51 beats 83. Heyward needs to bend at the knees not at the waist.
83 Heywrd bounces back keeps his leverage in holds out 51.

    General notes:
Austin takes one 40 yds for the score on a 9. Even with db then a burst n he was gone. Nice to see the speed live.
Boyken showing decent hands. Ball not getting to his chest.
Pickens makes circus catch with good coverage by Porter. You likely saw that already on twitter. Place went loud with that.

    More Back on Backers:
    44 beats 38
    30 blocks out 50.
54 gets through 81. Gentry needs to bend those knees he's tall n it's hurting him in pass pro.
    56 vs 80 I'll call this a draw.
93 had good get off I couldn't read the blockers #. Many today had their shirts half up tough to get the number.
83 blocks out 51. Heyward using better leverage now. Striking a rising blow getting the rusher upright.
81 blocks out 40. Good to see Gentry win one.
83 blocks out 45. Some good improvement here for Connor.
51 beats 80 wide in the battle of the rookies.
26 Alexander beat unknown blocker with pure speed. Has a real good get off . Speed n some good bend makes it tough to ride him wide.

    11 on 11:
Watt stuffs 8 hole run. 90 showing good hand use n leverage against Chuks.
Harris on 8 hole run right at Watt. Blocking was good call it gain of 5.
Warren on 7 hole run 70 to the house behind Seumalo n Moore who sealed it and nice speed by 30 one cut n go.
Warren gets stoned by 90 on 8 hole run. Watt plays with impressive leverage.
MT qb hits White on a drag. Good hands catch and nice burst. Call it a gain of 20.
3 hole run stuffed by Alexander. Washington blocks Herbig "out of frame" for you old school guys.
Hagens in with single back set. He gets drilled and Fumbles recovered by Muse.
Note: Trice down with lower leg injury. Saw him go down, it was a big hit right next to him but it looked like play landed on the back of his legs. Only downer of the day.

    11 on 11:
8 at qb tries to hit 14 on a dig inc PP in good coverage.
Warren 5 yds on 8 hole run. Seems like they want to get him to the edge. Good burst today.
8 with time hits 14 on a drag but 88 ran a hook n was wide open n KP just didn't see him.
10 at qb 77 at LT - White runs a 9 but Porter step for step and a PICK with a nice return on top of it. Porter able to get his head around and showed good speed in coverage n during the return.
10 at qb 1 hole run blown up for loss by Leal .
Des Fitzpatrick on a 20 yard in cut. Nice catch n run.
25 Hagans on a 7 hole run belted by Alexander.
Leal with good pressure bats pass almost a pick by him on the play as well. Quick get off.

    Quick notes:
Morgan in 35 yd pass drill today showed arm was not all that and release not all that.
DJ nice hands today. All day passes did not get to his body. DJ took a minute during warm ups today to autograph stuff for 2 kids. Crowd gave him some kudos.
Pickens making multiple catches that crowd liked. He was on today.
Cody White our forgotten PS wr had a nice catch in a crowd today. Good concentration.
Riley in pass coverage above average today.
For Butler fans he showed today some really good hands. Good body control as well for a really large wr.
Duke Dawson #33 sticky in coverage. Not the largest db but got his hands on a few passes.

8 hits DJ on a an out for TD in red zone session. Pass was right between the 1 n the 8.
8 hits White on quick slant for call it 10 yds. White having a real solid day.
8 still in hits Conner on a wheel against Riley nice catch but refs called it incomplete out of bounds back of the end zone.
10 at qb broken play MT lofts it up on jump ball to Washington in end zone who just out high points the ball for e-a-s-y TD.

    Closing notes:
After running a bunch of "pistol "prior to today not one play out of it with the pads on.
Porter with a good day even though Pickens got him twice.
Cody White coming out party today. Best I ever saw him look. Hands ( had 1 combat catch) but more then a few non body catches with some yack.
Washington looking like he can block and because of his size he just ran some simple hooks and it's like he is posting up and an easy pitch n catch.
Alexander #26 really quick today with no false steps.
Morgan not seeing team drills. Just a limited number of reps so the 4 got none today.
Dan Moore getting reps at RT today.
91 Marshall good short area quickness,

    Post practice:

Washington on jugs machine. Putting in the extra work.
DJ having passes tossed at his feet working on improving his hands. Good to see the extra reps working with passes that are off the mark as they often are on game day.

    I'll try it again tomorrow.

Very nice Iron City. More on Warren please. Is he not more impressive than Harris live? IMO, he opens up so much for the offense. He gives us the threat of outside running / more flexibly in the play calling. Also how did Jones look a left tackle with the #1's? I'd keep him in there as a starter at left tackle. Let him prove he can handle it, and if he can keep him in there. He is going against some great edge rushers.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

Nice job. I’m envious of how much detail you captured with 3 fields and guys working all over the place.

We just focused certain groups and certain fields at a time and had a hard time watching everything.

Warren is quicker and a 1 cut and go guy. Had 1 impressive run to the outside yesterday.

But Najee is jacked. And the OLine is improved and teams aren’t gonna be able to load up the box and Najee is gonna have a break out year imho.

No reason both guys can’t be good.

The thing that I love about Pickens and Porter - those two will take each other to higher levels. I just hope they don't take it personal (the ball hand off after the catch was a bit much - but, friends could get away with that).

If you've spent camp covering Pickens daily, you're ready for most of what an elite "contested catch" WR can throw at you
