See, in the place called 'Earth' there's the other smaller places called 'countries'. Not all of them, remarkably, are called America, or even the United States of America.

As you can see in my location, i'm from a make-believe land called Australia, where we use what is called "The King's English" as our common language. Believe it or not, we didn't barstardise the language the way...some others may have. We also don't call inter-nation competitions involving no other countries "world series" or claim a team who only beats teams from 1 nation "world champions", but I digress.

In Australia, we shorten mathematics to maths. Because you see, math on it's own is singular. "Maths" actually covers multiple aspects because it's a plural. But I'm sure your English teacher helped you with that one.
