Joel and Whiskers you guys clearly do not expect(or want it seems like??)Kenny to be a successful QB this year. What exactly does he need to do to be successful?
stats, wins what ever you choose to judge him by?

I know that this wasn't asked of me...but I think maybe it's good to get perspectives from people who think he's the truth, people that are on the fence (like me), and people that don't think he has "it".

All in all, I think he had a fairly successful rookie season vs. reasonable expectations (i.e. not comparing him to Ben). In year one, I wanted to see some level of "magic". And I think we got that in the last two games.

But "magic" is hard to quantify...so I'll take a stab at a list of things here. Clearly won't be perfect (maybe not even good).

        1) Continue to be good with limiting turnovers. I don't expect 5 games with no turnovers or whatever it was. But continuing showing that he can limit stupid mistakes (even several of his picks weren't stupid mistakes...had bad luck on at least some of them).

        2) Continue to make plays late in game / in pressure situations.

        3) Dramatically improve in red zone performance. I believe he was at or near the bottom of QBs who had X number of attempts in the red zone. Not unreasonable for a rookie IMO. But, I don't think you can be a successful NFL QB if you have this kind of limitation over the long term.

        4) Have multiple games with multiple TD passes. This probably goes with (3). I don't much care what is total yards are. But I would like to see better TD%. Hopefully better yards per attempt and air yards per attempt. Some of that is scheme and some is the QB.

        5) Same with intermediate passing. Had some good deep passing number on limited attempts, but I think was also near the bottom of eligible QBs in intermediate passing.

        6) I think this is related to (4), but make quick decisions and throw good balls to guys who have the opportunity to run after the catch. I realize that at least some of this is on the OC. But I don't think it's all the QB. Particularly the dramatic decrease in YAC from DJ from 2 seasons ago (when MC was also the OC).

        7) Lead the team to a playoff berth. And hopefully don't look out of place in his first playoff game.

Try to avoid getting his bell rung. Some of this is the OL. Some of it is refs not protecting rookie QBs as much as established vets. But he needs to take fewer hits per drop back IMO.

He also needs significant improvement passing in the red zone. I believe he is toward the bottom of starting QBs in that department.

Not the end of the world because he's a rookie and struggles are to be expected.

But, certainly an area where he really needs to improve.

I wonder if zone D is more common in the short fields and if the red zone troubles are the same as the zone troubles?
He has loads to improve over his 76 rating and scoring problems, but I am willing to give him 1/2 way into his 2nd year to see if he can.

Unfortunately, the hits that gave him concussions looked pretty tame, hopefully they weren't signs of things to come.

Rollins does a tremendous job breaking down NFL players and college prospects on his youtube channel, even having one-on-one sessions with former NFL superstars like Chris Johnson.

In one of his more recent breakdowns, Rollins examined most of Kenny Pickett's snaps. Here is what he had to say:

Preview YouTube video Kenny Pickett goes blind against zone coverage.

              >>> My take is with game tape on him, teams will be better prepared this season. Picketts need major improvement. Yes, he needs work in zone. The writer is correct. If he does not show it, he's a low end game manager No one wants that. Not a franchise QB. Not a very good type 8-12 type of QB either. And he needs to stay healthy. - JB
              who is this guy?

do you have his take on peyton's rookie season? 28 int's and a 57 completion %

and that's with peyton getting 1st team reps as soon as camp opened

                Steel Maniac is a coward.

he's like the little boy who comes onto his front porch to yell insults at the other kids across the street, then runs back inside and locks all the doors and hides under his bed.

Which Steelers WR excels against zone coverage?

Its not like Kenny came into a mature system where he can lean into throwing to a Hines Ward any time there’s zone coverage.

He needs to elevate the other players around him. That is complete a high percentage of passes, make plays that are down the field more often, locate the open man quicker, lead the offense to more scoring drives, and avoid being knocked out of the game. He was below average here.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

he was only a rookie, let's see if he improves this season.

                      I expect him to.
