Doesn't always work out that way, I trust his context-based middle of the pack PFF grade over his bottom of the league "passer rating". If you believe this much in passer rating, then you must believe the Niners have the best and 4th best QBs in the entire league.Comment

i thought one of the first throws they showed. Pass to claypool should have been caught. Said it was behind him which is was and let the db get in there. But claypool wasn’t exactly good at congested catches. I’d say he was below average at themComment

Ya...I think he was also close to last in the league in red zone passing metrics too IIRC.Posted this before; KP ranked 31st in passes 10 - 20 yds.

And the fans aren't the only ones that have high expectations for KP this season. Here's P2 putting the pressure on him as well:
NFL Rumors: New Steelers DB Patrick Peterson puts all the pressure on Pickett
When you look around the Pittsburgh Steelers roster, it's hard to find any true weakness after the offseason they pieced together. With the offensive line fortified by the additions of Broderick Jones and Isaac Seumalo, the offensive line is substantially improved. The skill positions are both young and terrific, and we know that T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward and the defense are going to perform.
The biggest factor is how Kenny Pickett plays in year two. There's no doubt that the Steelers quarterback is well aware of that. But if you're a teammate in Mike Tomlin's locker room, though, the expectation would be that you would do everything to support your quarterback.
However, one of Pittsburgh's biggest offseason additions, veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson, is simply putting pressure on his new signal-caller. A lot of it.
In a recent interview with Jim Rome, Peterson was asked if the Steelers could win a Super Bowl. And the cornerback essentially put it all on the back of his quarterback.
"I do, and what it's going to come down to is we have all the pieces that we need on defense," Peterson said. "We know defense wins championships. We have talent across the board on the offensive side of the ball. I believe the front office did a great job of getting what we needed in the draft as far as getting Broderick (Jones) in the first round, a left tackle, young pup who you should expect to see play a lot. You added Allen Robinson, you got Diontae Johnson, you got George Pickens, you got Najee (Harris). You know it's all going to come down to how well Kenny can play and can he put the ball where it needs to go."
That last line is the kicker. Talk about asking a lot from one guy.
To be clear, Peterson isn't wrong. Pickett took over as the starting quarterback early last season and had his share of ups and downs but, overall, looked promising. And how he performs in his sophomore campaign is vitally important to the level of success Pittsburgh can reach in the 2023 season.
At the same time, though, fans would likely expect a teammate, especially one who has logged some miles around the NFL, to do what they can to foster a young quarterback and his psyche ? not put the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Only a rookie, but I hope that he can make big strides in these two areas. I don't think you can end up being an above average guy when you're last in the league in some important areas like this.Comment

It's one tool. Just like PFF is one tool.Passer rating is a grade for the entire passing game, not just the QB. If you assign rating 100% to the QB, you're doing it wrong. Purdy's late, inaccurate short throw to Deebo in the playoffs likely got a perfect 158 passer rating because Deebo made a great play, while KP's seed to Pickens vs. Cincy got a 0.0 because Pickens dropped a walk-in TD.
Do you credit Purdy and Kenny for 100% of their "ratings" on those plays?
I get that you subscribe to PFF. But that doesn't mean that they are the only way to measure things.Comment

I think this was part of AK's point. Some of those plays should have been caught. but throwing it behind a guy means he's not going to get YAC. When your team is last in YAC, probably part of it is on the QB. And the highlights he showed seem like they support this idea. And also the idea that we tried to call more of the things he's good at and fewer of the things he wasn't good at.
This doesn't mean that Canada is a good OC. I think he isn't. But it's certainly not shocking that a rookie QB has stuff he needs to get better at to become above average in the NFL.Comment

Didn't watch enough of Niner games to say but Garoppolo can be a very efficient passer. And for passers that started at least 9 games, Purdy was ranked 29th. You don't seem to have a problem with Burrow, Mahomes, or Allen's ratings at the top. And Burrow's WR was 3rd in the NFL with drops.Doesn't always work out that way, I trust his context-based middle of the pack PFF grade over his bottom of the league "passer rating". On the other hand, when a QB completes less than 50% of passes in a game I don't care how much 'context' you bring into the conversation, the rating is going to suck.Comment

Purdy's passer rating was 107.3, good enough for first in the league. His PFF grade was 76.6, a point ahead of Kenny's. THAT'S why I don't trust his passer rating. Well, that and my own eyes after watching him in several games. Burrow, Mahomes, and Allen all graded out as Elite in PFF (90+).Didn't watch enough of Niner games to say but Garoppolo can be a very efficient passer. Passer rating is 100% results based, ignoring luck, both good and bad. Doesn't always even out over the course of a season, 2018 Trubisky is a great case study.Last edited by WindyCitySteel; 06-18-2023, 07:48 PM.Comment

The next gen stats chart is cool. But I sit here and wonder how much the route matters?
Was the WR’s just covered so well that KP put it where only the WR could possibly catch it? Making the catch harder.
In other words how much of this falls on Canada? Yes I believe players have to execute the plays. But if the play calls are bad for whatever reason it makes it how much harder on the QB and WR’s.
KP did alright for a rookie. What can he do in 23-24 matters more. Can the WR’s be better also? Oh boy can Canada. Probably not. Lol
I also wonder what this chart looks like for Ben’s last season.Comment

there wasn’t much YAC available on the play I referred to.
It was down the field near the sideline with a defender right behind him.
still it’s a 15-20 yard catch. A good pass play if caught.
claypool wasn’t very good at congested catches.
and while burrow and mahomes are great. Not every throw they make is 100% accurate.
their receivers have to make plays too. They are getting paid as well.Comment

I mean we have no indication as of yet that KP will ever compete with the likes of Burrows or Mahomes. I think hes going to be a quality NFL QB certainly top 10 at some point. I will say if the Steelers can keep it close, KP has shown some clutch. So I stand by building that running game and D.Last edited by Shawn; 06-26-2023, 09:54 PM.Trolls are people too.Comment

I agree. KP could be very good but will likely never be elite. +1. It would be progress if he can become an above avergae starter in the NFL. That is the bar for 2023.
He is 31 of 32 in passes of 10 yards or more. Who is 32nd? Someone who will not be staring in 2023? I think so, at least not for long.
As always Northern Blitz posts good information.Last edited by Joel Buchsbaum; 06-27-2023, 06:30 AM.Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.
Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.
*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***Comment

Of course this is true. But you can't look at the anecdotes. You have to look at the whole body of work.there wasn?t much YAC available on the play I referred to.
It was down the field near the sideline with a defender right behind him.
still it?s a 15-20 yard catch. A good pass play if caught.

their receivers have to make plays too. They are getting paid as well.
And I think we were last (or at least very close to it) in YAC last year. Part of that is certainly on the QB (part on the WRs, part on the OC). I think it's not good that he's among the worst in the league in several important categories (like intermediate passing and passing in the red zone). Maybe that's common for rookies, but it doesn't seem like a great early indicator to me.
Not sure why you don't trust AK on this. Just like PFF, he watched every play of the season and reported what he saw. This is the kind of analysis you say you value.Comment

This year will tell us a lot about Kenny. Folks are saying he will never be this or that after 12 games his rookie year when he was thrown in the fire during the toughest stretch of our schedule.
He’s battle teated now. I expect big things this year.
Not sure how anyone can say what he will and won’t be when you look at the way the second half of the season played out. Kenny definitely has to improve, but so does the WR unit and the OL.
On paper I think we improved the OL immensely and it will pay dividends this year.Steelers 27
