I'd say this is a combination cap saving move/football move

The team just brought in two draftees - including one early, they brought in one highly regarded (and old) FA vet, a couple of other FAs, and still have corners on the roster. Witherspoon was overpaid based on a 4 game sample size, and has barely stayed on the field or performed when he has. The cap savings is a nice bonus.

i wouldn't say we're actually strong at the position to be out right releasing him on play alone.

relying on a 33 yr old corner and a 7th rounder doesn't sound like an ideal situation to me. love the poential porter brings but he too is a rookie

I'd agree with that if we were talking about Wallace (same cap hit, same savings if cut) who was a starter and contributor last season. But Witherspoon has barely played his last two years, hasn't played well when in the game, and the sum total of quality game tape was the last 4 games of his contract year - for a guy who had never shown that much beforehand.
