My Offseason Strategy and Mock Draft 1.0

Free Agents: No Contract Offer - Rudolph, Bush, Watt, Davis, Alualu, Allen, Edmunds, Reed, Wormley, Scott, Joseph, Boykin, Snell, Hassenhauer

Free Agents: Re-sign - Ogunjobi, Sutton, Spillane (VM), Kazee, Sims, Jones, Pierre, Gentry (VM), (VM) = vet minimum

Cut List: Gunner, Green, Okorafor, Jack, Jackson, Harvin, Dotson

Cut or Trade List: Trubisky and Diontae Johnson; I'm trading Johnson because I'm tired of his drops and his seeing his negative facial expressions. I trade him to the Patriots because Belichick speaks very highly of Johnson and it fills a very big need for them. I think very highly of Mac Jones and I want him to be Pickett's backup. I think his main problem with the Patriots was the terrible play calling. Plus articles indicate that Belichick wasn't happy with Mac Jones going behind his back. The Steelers also receive the Pats pick at #108 in 2023, a 4th rounder in 2024 and Mac Jones. I would also listen to all trade offers for Trubisky.

Free Agency: I target the following players: CB - Rock Ya-Sin - This is a player Tomlin loved from the 2019 draft class. If I'm not mistaken the organization invited him for a visit. He's a steady player and has a PFF of around 70. Plus he won't cost too much.

DT - Andrew Billings - Billings is another under the radar type of player and NT is a big need. He won't cost anywhere near the price of $20 million per season like Javon Hargrave would. He doesn't have Hargrave's pass rushing ability but he will shut down the run and give a little push up the middle.

ILB - David Long or Germaine Pratt: These two are good players with outstanding value. I know Long is talked about a lot as a player that would fit in the Burgh. Pratt had a PFF rating of 80. I also loved the fact that he was very vocal in calling out Ossai for his foolish penalty against Mahomes. We need more leaders like this on our roster.

WR - Mecole Hardman or Parris Campbell - Our WR's lack speed. These two are low 4.3 speedsters and they won't make us so one dimensional in the open field.

OT- Andre Dillard OT: Unfortunately for Dillard he was injured far too often in his first couple of seasons in the league and got passed on the depth chart by a pro bowl caliber OT. Dillard is a technician and I would move him to RT and cut the underwhelming Okorafor.

    My Mock Draft:

Pick #17. Paris Johnson OT Ohio State: Johnson fulfills a very big need which wasn't met with Moore at OT. I would cut Dotson and move Moore to his position at LG. I consider Moore a mauler and not a protector of the QB so guard is a better suited to his skill set, imo.

Pick #33 John Schmitz C Minnesota: I feel like he is he best center in the draft. Cole would become the backup immediately. The new revamped o-line would look like this: LT- Paris Johnson LG- Dan Moore C- John Schmitz RG- Daniels RT- Free Agent Andre Dillard.

Pick #50 Mazi Smith NT Michigan: Not only is he is a good space eater, he's athletic and explosive for a big man. Combine him with my free agent Andrew Billings and we are way more stout up front. Plus this will free up Ogunjobi to play DE more often instead of NT which isn't his best position in our defense.

Pick #81 JL Skinner S Boise State: I don't resign Edmunds and instead draft Skinner to be our in the box safety. This will allow Fitzpatrick to do what he does best and create turnovers. Skinner will scare the living fu** out of the WR's crossing in open space. He's literally going to decapitate the opposing offensive players. Dude hits like a freight train. He brings that intimidation factor to the defense.

Pick #108 Jayden Reed WR Michigan State: This is one of the draft picks I got in the trade with the Pats. One of the things that drives me crazy is all the drops from WR's. With Reed you won't have this problem. He caught 98% of the passes thrown his way. Plus he has 4.42 speed which is significantly faster than the crybaby Johnson, and he's always smiling on the field too.

Pick #121 DeMarvion Overshown ILB Texas: He's a pure sideline to sideline, seek and destroy tackler. He's incredibly athletic with great burst. Like Skinner he has the ability to hurt ball carriers and receivers. Keep you head up boys, we're coming for you! The ILB groups will now look like Long or Pratt, Robinson, Overshown, Spillane and also Skinner is a possibility. A hard hitting group indeed.

Pick #237 Darius Rush CB South Carolina: Rush is a good blitzer from the edge and very aggressive at tackling. I didn't pick a CB earlier because I'm not confident we can develop them. Besides this I'm signing Rock Ya-Sin and we have Sutton, Wallace, Witherspoon and Pierre too.

Pick #244 Brenton Cox OLB Florida: A pure developmental project who has good upside. Yes, he got kicked off his team but I'm told Tomlin is a great coach so time for Tomlin to motivate this young player and get the best out of him.

Good work, i love seeing people's views on offseason moves, and thanks I know it is sooo time consuming.

I like a lot of this, but this is the 2nd call I've seen this morning to move Moore to LG, and he's a worse run-blocker than he is a pass-blocker, per PFF, I believe. Just get a better LG and let Moore be your swing T backup.

I actually think I screwed this up. If I recall correctly James Daniels prefers to play LG and Dan Moore prefers the right side. I should have swapped the two of them. I wonder if that move would improve Moore's play?

Since I now have Cole as a backup, I wonder if he could compete with Moore for one of the guard positions? I know Cole has played that position before. Nevertheless, I share your concern about Moore's play.

The only questionable ones on the above list are Edmunds, Boykin and Snell. I doubt Edmunds would accept as low as an offer as he took last year. If he did, I'm sure Pgh would take him back. He has slowly got better each year, although still not playing to his 1st round status. Boykin? They might be wanting to prove he was a good FA signing, although he has proven he will never be much of an NFL WR. Balt. let him go for good reason. Pgh only signed him because they liked him coming out of the draft he did. And no, they had no coaching tricks that Balt. did not, as was proven. Snell could be back on his special teams and 3rd string RB play.

Free Agents: Re-sign - Ogunjobi, Sutton, Spillane (VM), Kazee, Sims, Jones, Pierre, Gentry (VM), (VM) = vet minimum

I'd be happy with this re-sign list. It could prove more expensive for Pgh than they have blood for, especially with Larry O. and Sutton. Don't forget Larry was inline for a big contract with Chicago before he failed their physical; he's gonna be looking for something along those same lines now that he's healthy. Sutton could also be too costly, as having made a few plays down the stretch in 2022 could have inflated his asking price.

Cut List: Gunner, Green, Okorafor, Jack, Jackson, Harvin, Dotson

I doubt Chuks is going anywhere. Once Pgh signs you to a long term deal, they usually don't change course. And, unlike Moore, he hasn't been an abject failure, just not great.

Rooney has already said he wants Trubisky back. He's usually not playing word games on stuff like this. But I don't know that Mitch feels the same way and wants to be back. If there was a situation/team where he was more likely to compete for a starting job, he would likely want to go there. The question is, is there any team that is in a situation where MT could compete for a starting gig. I'm not sure there is.

With DJ, I don't know how much he would garner in a trade. IF it's not a 2nd round, I don't know that Pgh would be interested. And I don't know that there is any team that would give up a 2nd. It's not every day that a Bears team is around looking for a garbage trade. They are STILL talking about Claypool's potential. Good luck with THAT.

That draft has a lot of guys that I really like. If they pull off the first 3 picks? Mic drop.

The only question I have through it all is: why are so many calling for cutting Chuks? Is the the money?

Side note - I *knew* you had some knowledge and it was getting lost. LOVE this post.

Thank you. I don't dislike Okorafor, but the money is a big factor as his play doesn't justify his hefty salary. Plus, I think we need to free up some money for free agency. I'll let the cap gurus figure this important stuff out as it is above my pay grade.

I don't dislike Terrell Edmunds. I actually think he's decent. I'm not opposed to keeping Terrell, if I knew I could sign his brother, because his brother is darn good and we have a big need at ILB.

Can't disagree with this, in my world if the Steelers were to make one splash free agent signing Edmunds would be my target.

not every position on defense can be a high contract or high draft pick

Nice work Prowler. A few moves I agree, a couple not, but for the most part realistic. I don't think that trading DJ is realistic, but very well thought out.

This seems like a really solid plan.

Even if it didn't play out with the same guys or whatever, you can tell how much thought went into putting this together.

I do echo what Windy said in that I don't know if there's much data to suggest that Moore can play guard. But I'd think about it like we have Cole to move over too. Maybe he's the starter at G and Moore is the swing. I'd also try to keep Chuks for competition and depth. I think it's not a good idea to go in with the depth we had this year. It's unlikely we have no injuries on the OL again.

                              Thanks for the read Prowler.
