Is an NFL draft lottery system coming?

Is an NFL draft lottery system coming?

We don't see this mentioned in NFL media, but I think it is very likely the NFL will have a draft lottery like the NHL or NBA has. Yes-- the NBA commissioner is openly talking about teams tanking for their draft. There is a guy from France who is 7'4" with a skill set only found in a players 6"-8" shorter then he is. A generational talent they say and a slam sunk to be the #1 overall pick. A draft lottery is a way to limit obvious tanking.

Anyway I think a draft lottery is cool for the fans and its not like we will ever get the first pick in my lifetime. It's great for ratings too. Fans dream of getting that ping pong ball, and the way its revealed is excellent. We are tending for a " lottery pick " currently. Next 1-4 seasons I think its likely.

    What do you think?
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

When I've heard people talk about this in the past, they've said it's not likely because it incentivizes more teams to tank.

One idea that I did hear from one of the pundits one time a while back is that the bottom 5-10-15-20 teams (however many are in the lottery) get 1 ball each and it's not weighted to give teams incentive to tank their seasons.

I think it would be interesting if you gave everyone 1 ball. All 32 teams. And even the SuperBowl winner could get the 1st pick. And it's just a bonus extra first round pick. Then the worst team would get the 2nd pick thru the SuperBowl winner getting pick 33 in the 1st round.

I would not included the playoffs teams to get a chance at the lottery as the is NO TAKING in them. I say no chance for the top 14 teams in the playoffs. But the rest of team like the 15 or 16th worst, sure giving them a small 1 % chance or so of winning the lottery. The chance to tank in the NFL now for the draft is better without a lottery system as it guarantees a top 1 or 3 pick! Without a lottery system there is no guarantee at all. You pick where you finish in the NFL. So the odds of getting a top three pick in a lottery system for are in fact worse. I think it limits tanking a bit, and let's be real there is such talk in the NFL. The NFL just doesn't want to talk about it let alone admit it.

Here are the odds for the NBA lottery.

The official site for the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. The participating teams and final Lottery odds will be determined at the conclusion of the 2024-25 regular season.

Lottery systems just move the window of which teams will end up tanking. You have a fringe playoff team that will not advance in the playoffs, you going all out in week 17 or taking a shot at the #1 pick in the draft in April?

Tanking seems better suited for a game like the NBA. I don't think tanking works in a larger team game like the NFL. I don't know how teams could build a consistently winning culture with the tanking philosophy.

I think a lottery is a good idea.

The rookie QB deal is such a huge advantage that grunge incentive to tank is probably too big.

I'd limit it to maybe the worst 5 teams or something
