3rd down proficiency is the biggest reminder that there are lies, damn lies and facts. 3rd down proficiency is mostly determined by what happens in 1st and 2nd downs: if you get decent yardage to produce a 3rd and short, then you magically are more proficient at 3rd down conversions, yet that is hardly mentioned when announcers speak of "3rd down proficiency." It is a fact which is often a lie when they leave out that teams highly proficient at converting 3rd downs do so because they are usually operating in a 3rd and short scenario, not 3rd and 8 as Pgh often is, because we suck at 1st and 2nd downs; we run Harris for his less (often much less) than 3 ypc and wonder why it's so hard to convert 3rd downs.

That's why success rate is more useful. Factors in yds gained on all downs relative to getting the 1st down.
Example; a 2 yard gain on 2nd and 8 is not successful.
