I'm generally not a huge fan of always kicking the cap hit on big contracts. But we do get to carry over any unused cap hit from this year over into next season.
I was hoping (and it was looking like) they weren't going to touch his contract.
If they do use it to get help at OL, I hope it comes with more of a medium to long term solution vs. just a 1 year guy (e.g. an old expensive guy who won't live up to the contract number).
I'm hopeful that they will approach it like that. Because that seems to be what they did with both Daniels and Cole. Even if these players don't necessarily work out. I think getting youngish guys with term is better than hurting the future cap for a one year guy (especially given where we are in terms of building the team).Comment

Unfortunately, probably nothing.
Under KC the Steelers always liked to go into the season with $5-10M in cap space available in case something comes up. I think this restructure puts them in the $8M range.
Any surplus can be rolled into next year so no risk in losing the cap space if it goes unused.Comment

I hope we don't continually kick his cap hit down the road though...although maybe it wouldn't be as painful as Ben's eventual hit because (1) he's not a QB, so the money isn't AS outrageous and (2) we probably won't also get hit with a massive geopolitical event that screws with the escalation of the cap.Comment

Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.
Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.
*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***Comment

I don't see any reason for this unless they are planning to make a trade and need to create space. Although maybe swapping the contracts of Reed and Jones left them a little too tight against the cap. I could have sworn they had over $5M in cap space a couple of weeks back though. Not enough to sign anyone who could help, but enough to handle lower-level transactions for the year.
Let's hope it's a trade...for an inside backer or offensive tackle!sigpic

Tj’s contract is structured in a way that they’ll likely restructure it every year.
just as they did with BenComment
