Mitch Trubisky to start Steelers’ final preseason game

Mitch Trubisky to start Steelers’ final preseason game

Posted by Michael David Smith on August 26, 2022

The Steelers won’t name a starter until giving each quarterback one more chance to prove himself in the preseason finale, but Mitch Trubisky remains the favorite.

Trubisky will start the Steelers’ preseason finale against the Lions on Sunday, head coach Mike Tomlin announced today.

That’s no surprise: Trubisky has been atop the Steelers’ quarterback depth chart throughout the offseason. Unless he turns in a terrible performance or gets hurt against the Lions, from all indications Trubisky will start the Week One opener against the Bengals.

Perhaps more interesting will be the competition between rookie first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett and veteran Mason Rudolph for the No. 2 job. Pickett now appears to be the favorite to win that competition.

Assuming Trubisky does start the regular season, Tomlin may have a quick hook, as Pickett has impressed in the preseason. It shouldn’t be surprising to anyone if Trubisky opens the season as the starter, but closes the season on the sideline.

Smart decision for start of the season

Got a tough stretch early and don't need Pickett to lose confidence

It appears that those who said "there was no legit QB competition" were right all along. But Pgh just had to have their fake dog and pony show regardless.

Those who aren't stupid and don't have agendas know you don't bring in an experienced, former Pro Bowl free agent QB to sit behind an untested rookie

Maybe later in the season but no reason to rush KP just like there wasn't a reason to rush Big Ben

All things at the proper time

Nah.. whisper is correct. MT is nothing special and folks are trying to act
like Pickett is some weak minded kid who can’t handle a loss or a rough start.

Seattle did it with Russell Wilson and it worked out fine.

If MT was coming off a pro bowl season I would agree. Dude threw 8 passes last year. Play the best QB and win as many games as possible.

Heck, truth be told MR outplayed MT. This is a silly decision.

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

I think your spot on with this one. MT making 7 mil a year and your going to sit him? Come on.

We know what MR looks like when the lights come on. It's not pretty.

how much $$$ a player is being paid shouldn't matter.

performance and who gives us the best chance to win should be the determining factors.

First off, MT isn’t making $7 mill. He is making the same or slightly less than MR.

Second. $4 mill, hell.. even $7 mill is chump change at the QB position.

Agreed, 7 million is pretty minute to this position.

This is silly but the Steelers look to be going with it. MT looked horrendous when he was pressured. Horrendous.

Performance against vanilla game plans and third stringers shouldn't be the only criteria

Too easy to forget the team is with these guys everyday in meetings and on the practice field. They know who has command of the play book and who doesn't.

if Robinson wins the starting ILB job how many would say Bush deserves it because of his pay and draft pedigree?

yeah.. I would be less upset (although still upset, lol) if it was Mason.

                            MT has been pedestrian IMO.

Seriously, if Pickett comes in and we continue to see the offense move smoothly it will be a crime if he doesn’t win the gig.

true, but to say someone should start because of how much they're being paid is just plain stupid.
