    Camp report 8/4

Back at Latrobe after 2 years. It felt great to be there today with a bunch of my buds.

Heavy rains just before the start of practice but it stopped in time to get things started at 1 55.

Speacial teams work done early with Danny Smith setting up returns on both KO n punt returns.
Punt returners in order of reps went like this ...89,19,84,21,15,17,80.
The good.... Gunner O is clearly the best at this as of today. Footwork is excellent getting in position to catch the punt and has the short area quickness to make folks miss though long speed is only so so.
The bad 21 wr McKinnley had a bad drop then after the drop did not chase the ball down. Coaches hate that.

Qb's n wr's doing some simple drills but Austin stood out in this early session with some really good hand catches.
DJ in pads today n practicing. Had a drop late but overall he looked VG.

    7 Shots.
MT at qb. Pickens on a slant TD. Good start.
MT qb . Inc to 18 on a out... pass a bit high.
MT qb toss to Snell. Stuffed at the 2 by Loudermilk n others.
MT qb inc pass on quick out read well by Sutton who almost had the pick 6. Sutton may have gotten nicked up here.
MR qb. Warren in single back set . Fade to Boykin inc.
MR qb. Sternberger on a drag TD. Good toss.
8 QB. Durant in single back set. White makes nice TD grab. Pass was a dime. Crowd gave a loud cheer.

    WR /db 1 on 1

DJ runs a 9 n takes it to the house. Good hands catch over his shoulder.
Sternberger good day , good hands on a quick out.
Lane batted down a pass on an out may have gotten grabby coming out of his cut. Still good play.
Durant runs a wheel and shows good speed n hands. More on him later.
Miller on a slant beats Stephens. To much separation givn to Miller coming out of his cut.
Warren beats Gilbert badly on an out.
Sternberger again wins inside against Spillane. Good hand use by the TE to get separation from the jam.
White beats Sutton on a 9.
26 runs a chair n makes a great catch with Jack all over him in coverage. Good play both sides.
Kazee beaten by Heyward on a 9. Heywards hands today were good.
Piere brakes up short pass for Miller. nice play by the corner.
Snell beats jack on an out.
Rader with a nice hands catch. Not sure who he beat.

    Live 11 on 11

10 qb rolls left hits Gentry on a stick. Good grab.
10 qb Snell runs a 2 hole play and 78 trap blocks well from RG good gainer about 10yds.
2 qb Miller on a dig beats Lane. ( refs also toss flag on lane.) Yeah refs working 11 on 11's today.
8 qb inside hand off to Warren ,,,FUMBLE,, but he got it back.
8qb Jet sweep but 50 Scott makes the play but Leal had great get off n that was impressive.
10 qb A gap run closed by Robinson with big stop.

    Again special teams..
Gunner again shines on the returns. Austin got some reps n he is okay but that breakaway speed is real.

    11 on 11 not live.
10 qb toss left to Snell who cut it up to soon as Moore leveled the corner but Snell not setting up his blocks.
10 qb play action pass intended for Heyward inc broken up by 35. Nice play by the D.
2qb Wormley with pressure MR climbs the pocket well but missed Austin on a deep out.
2qb Boykin good on a 10 yd out.
8qb inc on flat pass to Warren
8qb Rolls right hits Austin in the flat. good gain.
8 qb on 2nd read hits 89 over the middle for a nice gain. Vet play right there from the rookie.
2qb 21 on a blitz clean play blown dead.

    11 on 11

8 qb empty set Heyward on a curl easy 7 yd gain. Ball getting out quick.
8qb Play action pass to Miller who was 2nd read. Another vet play.
8qb 26 runs jet sweep to the house. Some good speed there.

Late rain called it a bit early.

Overall today Heyward looked like he can play.
Wr's n Te's showed good hands all day.
Picket made a few real nice plays, getting through progressions good today.

I'm a bit rusty with it but I'll give it a try again Friday.

Thanks for the writeup IC!! So far, I've heard nothing about the play of our offensive tackles. Any word on their performance would definitely be appreciated.

          Thanks IC.

I always appreciate hearing from people that got to see it with their own eyes.

Glad that it sounds like the rain mostly held off.

And that you got to see what sounds like a pretty good day from KP.

I would love to hear some insight on how you think they may break up the snaps for the QB's in preseason, is that something you can get a feel for by being at camp?

Excellent job. What QB do you think looked best?
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

Chuks n Moore got the lions share at T. They both were serviceable. Got to remember their not going up against a lot of blitz packages, line slants, overloads etc in the vanilla D we see at camp. Tucker played T and G today. He gets into his pas sets rather quick for such a large man. I'll see how many reps he gets both inside and outside tomorrow. Haeg took a bunch of reps today and looked okay. He 's likely first T off the bench if a starter went down. Lets hope a starter doesn't go down. Scott a 3rd string T today was torched in pass pro in 11 on11. He had a false start as well that wasn't called so not his best day today. I'll watch him close under the lights.

Any sense of the Dotson vs. Green competition? I get that it's probably really hard to monitor OL stuff.

With only 3 pre--season games and limited live hitting to prepare for that I can't tell you how they may divide up reps. Today I believe Oladokum got 1 rep for sure. Perhaps 2 that was it. Now in some receiver drills he was dropping dimes from 30 yds but thats not like live practice 11 on 11. So their clearly is a problem getting enough work for the main 3 let alone a 4th.

Saw Green on skates today a few times. Let me watch these guys a few days in a row to get a better feel on what type of performance each guy is showing.

Let me look at them for a few days and that will give us all a clearer picture. Though Picket today performed fairly well as his first read was often covered n he got to 2 quickly and once to his third. More vet stuff than rookie stuff at least today. Lets see if he keeps that going but it was good to see the ball coming out on time.
