If you could pick one past steeler (non qb) in his prime to help, who?

If you could pick on past Steeler to help this team in his prime, who would it be?

I have a pretty good answer. Yours is?
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

A lot to choose from but a small list would be:

    1.) Joe Greene
    2.) Jack Lambert
    3.) Mel Blount
    4.) Jerome Bettis
    5.) Lynn Swann
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

First of all, without the no QB caveat the answer is obviously Ben. Basically without any hesitation despite all the great players we've had over time.

On Defense? Troy. Put him at SS with Minkah. Best safety tandem ever? I don't mind Edmunds, but Troy is a generational talent. Maybe some would argue Lambert or Mean Joe because we maybe need more help at ILB and DL. I certainly wouldn't complain about these (or a host of other great defenders). But in a passing league, I think I want Troy talking to Jesus back there.

Edited to add: I can't believe I didn't have Rod Woodson on my short list. We have question marks at CB and Rod means we have at least one spot locked down. Over Troy? Maybe.

Add #2: He wouldn't be my pick because I think we're OK at OLB (starters anyway), but seeing Harrison and Watt at OLBs would be a lot of fun.

On Offense? I think we're generally OK at skill positions (and you won't let me take Ben in his prime). So, I'd be looking for OL. Dawson, Faneca, or DeCastro. This is maybe cheating, but can I get Flozell Adams in his career prime, or just at his prime with the Steelers? If it's at his actual prime, maybe he's the pick on O.

What's your answer? I feel like the Flozell pick is kind of tricky (and could be cheating). I know you don't like our OL (hard to have much faith until we see it), so maybe that's what you're thinking?

slick call... and at the moment, I'd have to go with an O-lineman, myself...

Don't forget Woodson. I'd choose him over all the others right now.

              Greene, Lambert or Ham

              in that order.

              Stallworth on offense.

Woodson was one of my favorite Steelers, no doubt. But he is no Mel Blount. Both ae great in their own right.

The problem with these kinds of questions (or all-time Steelers teams) is that we've had so many amazing players.

On this current iteration of the team, it seems clear that the offense is in more need of help.

But how can you turn down the giants we've had on D?

I think Noll would struggle with the players of today.

Don't forget Blount could beat up on people during his best seasons. Dude was big and physical. Early 70s? Yeah I pick Blount.

In today's hands off game.... Woodson.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

                            TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

3.) Mel Blount - Skill set off the charts, smart, tough, physical
4.) Jerome Bettis - Consummate team player, locker-room leader, extends drives and takes the air out of the football.
5.) Lynn Swann - Courageous, leader, smart

See above, I needed to add "why"

This young team could use any or all of the above.
