After my beautifully crafted thread, "A Thought Occurred to Me About Mike Tomlin", I'm back with another teachable lesson, part two in this series. Before I begin, I will post some of the lyrics to the children's song, "5 Monkeys Jumping on the Bed", as they apply to my original thoughts on Mike Tomlin.
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"
One little monkey jumping on the bed
He fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
"Put those monkeys right to bed!"
One of my former students wrote a thesis after the SB about how the frequency of showboating, and hotdogging displayed by football players relates to productivity versus a team's overall record. His brilliant analysis found that the Steelers were the #2 team in the NFL in frequency of showboating and hotdogging. The least frequent showboating team's were at #32 - Rams, #31 Bills #30 Chiefs #29 Bengals #28 Patriots and #27 Packers. Clearly this is an issue which Tomlin needs to address.
So not only did Tomlin have no control over his players off the field, their bad lifestyle choices led to showboating, and hotdogging on the field, and as a result a lower overall record on the season. The 5 monkeys song sums up my lesson perfectly. If you're jumping around (showboating) you'll fall of the bed(fail on the field) and hurt yourself (hurt the record of the team). The last sentence of the 5 monkeys song says, "Put those monkeys right to bed". This is telling us that Tomlin needs to reign in his player's celebrations so that we have mature professionals instead of the clown show which is hurting the team. That my friends is another lesson learned from your mentor. Cheers.
