PFF: Pickett has everything he needs to start and succeed as a rookie

He's not going to be a rocket-armed gun-slinger, but he could be very good in the short and intermediate game and the Steelers have the talent to support that.

All the pieces are in place, how quickly he processes/reads D (and continues to improve in those areas) will determine how well he does in the league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers opted to select Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but is he a good fit in offensive coordinator Matt Canada's offense? PFF's Michael Hull investigates.

The Pitt quarterback was personally responsible for 34 pressures in 2021, tying Malik Willis for the most in the draft class. Pickett struggled under pressure last season, posting a 60.0 passing grade (34th among quarterbacks with at least 25 dropbacks) and committing eight turnover-worthy plays.
However, Pickett was an exceptional intermediate (10-19 yards) and short (0-9 yards) passer, posting a 93.7 grade on intermediate throws (highest in the class) and an 87.0 grade on short throws (second highest)
His career under pressure is pretty much abysmal so far, so pray that it improves. As is, he is the most ready dink and dunk QB in this class, so expecting anything more might be a stretch.

I was going to say, I hope "everything he needs" isn't supposed to include a solid OL, because he doesn't have one; once again neglected in the draft. They picked up a few "OK" IOL in FA, but did nothing to help the OTs. He's gonna be running for his life back there.

True that the line was passed over in the draft however they obtained 2 starters in free agency. Those were two huge weaknesses filled regardless of how. Now I'm not saying those 2 are pro bowl level but they are much better then what we had a year ago. Too, you have to believe Moore will be somewhat better so though our OL may be average at best it shouldn't stink as it did a year back.

O-line is a question mark still. No O-line and he's toast.

Plus Dotson is healthy. IOL should be much improved. Moore should be better, there's no way they're giving up on him after a year.

Wouldn't mind a vet FA signing at OT, though, to be honest.

It's not just about having everything a rookie needs. There is a learning curve for most rookies that come into the NFL. Learning to play in the NFL takes time. Learning to play the most difficult position in the sport takes time. There is nothing wrong with a rookie sitting and learning for awhile. Pickett will start if he proves to be better than the other options the Steelers have at QB.

Reading the article gives me a strong sense that the offense will lack explosive plays. They had the same problem last season. Intermediate routes are ok and better than what we've seen from Roethlisberger last season but they need to at least threaten a deep pass a few times a game to keep the defense from compressing the field.

Pickett seems a superb passer in the intermediate range so it's a step in the right direction.

It’s certainly not Randell el, Cedric wilson, jereme tumann and Willie Parker out there

the OL will be the key

The ONLY thing that matters is how will any players' skill set transfer over to the NFL. No fan will realize or know until the lights to on. Everything else is just talk.

If Ben could get to the playoffs at 40 with the line he had, we should be ok with
                        LT: Dan Moore Jr.
                        LG: Kevin Dotson
                        C: Mason Cole
                        RG: James Daniels
                        RT: Chukwuma Okorafor

                        and hopefully Pickett starting.

Yea, but there's always injuries and our depth is pretty much at zero. Zero draft picks on the OL sure didn't help. That Shades' arrogance we've seen in the past that got Ben killed.

It's ironic that Roethlisberger started out extending plays at the risk of being injured on a sack and ended with getting the ball out quicker than any other QB in the NFL.

After two days of OTAs, a couple of OL have chimed in on who they think the top dawg is.

The Pittsburgh Steelers as a full squad took the field yesterday for the first time in 2022, for the first OTA practice session of the year. That included
