    Bobby Wagner anyone?

Lost in the shock of the Wilson trade, the Seahawks cut Bobby Wagner.

Guy is a stud at LB...should we be interested?

How would we afford him? Cut Joe S, get ~8m back. Spend ~20m/yr on Wagner.

Im sure someone can play with the numbers and kick the can down the road, but what sense would it make to spend so much on Wagner who’s 31 when we’re likely a couple years from turning the team around and spending so much on an ILB may not be the best way to help the turnaround?

If not for the money. Sure. Would love to have Wagner who can tackle.

If this was 5 years ago I would be all over it...

This.. Which is too bad, because i like him.

Same reason trading for AR would have been a bad idea IMO. Although i guess this wouldn't also cost us a ton of draft capital

His completion % allowed last season was the worst of his career. But he is a tackling machine.

No thanks. Go young and cheap.

If they're drafting a project like Willis, I don't see the point in "win now" moves like this. In fact, I'd start doing some of what Seattle is doing.

I'd love to have Wagner. The guy can still ball and tie up the middle nicely for us. If the idea is to win using Defense and a running game, this is a good choice. Heck, even if we get a young QB it would be good to have this kind of vet presence- a guy with a ring, unlike the others in the locker room right now.

He's lost a step. Who's covering Kareem Hunt and Mark Andrews?

They'll scheme for them, I'm sure. He's still a level above anyone we have in there now.

The problem of this is 5 years ago he would've been somewhere around 3-4 years at $45M - $50M (in 2015 he signed a 4 yr deal at 43M, and 2019 he signed a 3 year deal at $54M).

Given that information, would you still be all over this deal (btw guaranteed money would've been roughly $22M)?

Just for history sake...his cap #'s

                    would've ranged between $13M - $17M.

Just suggesting...what he will get today is nowhere what he would get 5 years ago, frankly these numbers would be higher for today for what probably at the time was considered the best ILB/MLB in the biz (arguably).

Darius Leonard is making $19M a year on average...that would be what a Bobby Wagner in his prime would command. Given current Steeler cap they would have $9 M left to spare.

I don't think the Steelers would go for him if he was the Bobby Wagner of 5 years ago.

                    Brothervad

                    PS:

My guestimates are probably off...Bobby Wagner would probably want what Leonard just got a 5 year - $99M dollar deal (he was 27 5 years ago, which exactly Leonard's age)
                    His cap hit will start at 11.2M for 2022 and go to $20.2M in 2023, $20.1M in 2024, $23.5M in 2025, $19.7M in 2026

Right now, that would've made him the 2nd highest paid player on Steelers roster (TJ at $31M).

Thank you for the look at the cap ramifications. No thanks! Please don’t get cap crazy now with no franchise QB. A ILB upgrade is needed and they have been trying to bring in that vet guy for like what 3 seasons now. Just has not worked out.
Go younger if you going to use valuable cap space. NFL network today talked about Green Bay’s free agent LB , a tackling machine it sounded like. To lazy to look up his name. And I believe the Falcons have a tackling machine LB free agent also. Again to lazy to look up his name. Need to get a ILB and CB for sure on Defense.
The last 3 ILB (at least off the top of my head) vet players have failed but did not kill the cap that I seen.
Have to hedge that bet. Wagner is a bad bet if he is another failure. Too much cap.
Can’t pay Spoon either unless is a good deal for the Steelers. To many questions with him IMO. This year a lot of teams have big cap management decisions. So the FA market should be wild. Not even looking at trades to manage the cap. I seen talk of Dallas looking t trade there Offensive Tackle.

The Steelers know how to draft LBs so it doesn't make sense to sign a high priced FA. Unfortunately their problem right now is that many teams are looking for the same type of LB, at least inside LB anyway. But this class supposedly has quality depth.

Don't want to pay for his down years, I think we reneg Schobert and have Buddy in the wings. Bigger holes elsewhere. If Bush and Schobert flop this year, it's a priority in 2023.

Not gonna fill every hole in one year.

Though the money will make it impossible, he would be a great addition. He is a very humble and put together person. I taught at his high school, he used to have a class next door to mine as a Junior. We would talk in front before class, just and all around great person. I believe he has 3 or 4 brothers who all have same name like the George Foreman clan, but he is the only one that goes by Bobby vs Robert.

Every off-season decision I would make starts with the question "I think this team can be ready to compete again by 2024. Will this guy still be adding value and contributing to winning in 2024?"

I like everything about Bobby Wagner the player and the person. He has always seemed like the type of man you want in your locker room, like a Cam Heyward. Unfortunately, I don't think that he is the type of player who will still be a top competitor in 2 years.
