2022 Flippy Mock 1.0 - Earliest Mock Ever

At this point, everything is a wild guess because we have no idea how FA shaped up and the state of the roster going into the draft. So I'm just going to assume we shored up every position with acceptable talent and can just take the best players available.

    1. Jordan Davis - NT - Georgia

Let's just grab the biggest body we can find and plant him in the middle of our D and address the run D and free up the rest of our front 7 to make plays. The only concern here is this is a tall guy so leverage might be challenging for him, but he's a monster of a dude and that's gotta command a double team in the very middle which makes everything else easier giving our D a player advantage and essentially playing 10 on 9.

I like Willis and think the Steelers do too. But I think he's going higher than our slot and I'm not trying to do a trade up scenario here. Although I'd highly consider Willis or Stingley here if he drops, but I doubt either do. I'd consider trading up for either of those guys too.

    2. Jahan Dotson - WR - PSU

I think he could end up being one of the best WRs in this class. He's fast, shifty, physical, and has great hands and will go get balls. The only draw back is he's a little on the small side, but I see him as a guy that can always be open and will always make catches.

    3. Damone Clark - ILB - LSU

He's got the size, athleticism, and all the tools to be a great LB. I think he just needs the finishing at this point and we might as well take advantage of having Flores as our LB coach and get him an ILB with uber potential that he can help us develop. I see him being versatile in the run and passing game. Could be a good pairing with Bush assuming he turns it around, but if not, I think Clark could develop to be as good as we hoped Bush would be in his own right.

    4. Max Mitchell - OT - Louisiana

He's a long and athletic OT with a good base to work with. Probably needs a year of strength training to see where he can get. I think he could play either side, but he's a bit thin at this point that I would suspect his strength might be more aligned to being a LT, but nonetheless, he's gonna have to beef up to play either side. He's a bit of a finesse player at this point, but I think he'd have a ton of upside to be worth the gamble in round 4. I suspect someone could like him earlier if they envision him as a LT given the value of the position.

    6. Thayer Munford - G/T - OSU

He's a big dude for a OG currently and has played T pretty well in the past at OSU. I was surprised to see his name so far down some draft rankings. I think people were more impressed with him as a tackle then think he regressed when he moved inside to G. Seems like a pretty versatile guy on the Oline and might be worth it as a development project given his sheer size and NFL frame. I'm not 100% sure if he's a G or T.

    7a. Sterling Weatherford - S - Miami of OH

I haven't looked at enough players that could be available in the later parts of the draft, but consider, we haven't won a SuperBowl without a player from Miami of OH since the 70s. And the idea that Flores is going to work with LBs and Ss seems to make this pick a little more intriguing. Sterling is a LB body playing S. He's 6'4 and probably somewhere in the 230-40 range. He might have to convert to LB in the NFL. Or our Ss have had to make a lot of tackles lately so why not get a giant that can tackle to pair up with Minkah. And Flores was a guy that likes using player's versatility and this seems like the perfect project for him. I'm thinking we lean into getting guys for Flores to build up as much as possible even if we only have Flores for a year.

7b. Ali Fayad - OLB - Western Michigan

Seems a bit smallish for an edge rusher at 6'2" but he's got some size at about 250lbs. And he was productive in the MAC as the MAC DMVP. He's not a projected starter. He didn't get an invite to the combine, but I heard an interview of this kid a while back and he seems to believe in himself and motivated to prove all the doubters wrong. I think he's another good project for Flores and at least could be a ST demon for us while we figure out if he can contribute on D.

Below is my self-described very lazy version. It will change in due time.

    2022 Mock Draft

    1) Steelers swap #1 pick and send 2023 2nd round and 2024 3rd to the Jets and select Malik Willis, QB - Liberty
    2) Devonte Wyatt - DL - Georgia
    3) Daniel Faalele - OT - Minnesota
    4) Josh Jobe - CB - Alabama
    6) Calvin Austin - WR - Memphis
    7a) Quentin Lake, S, UCLA
    7b) Luke Fortner - IOL - Kentucky

Undrafted - Leddie Brown, Issah Pola-Mao, Connor Heyward,
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

Good picks. I like the UDFA listings too. I was surprised when I looked at how few picks we seemed to have this year. Feels like we could use some more picks and I wouldn't be against trading back and getting some more picks.

Seems a day late and a dollar short to address our God-awful OL (picks 4 and 6th); I'm not crazy about OL picks who need so much work in order to get good enough to start. We need the help right now. I doubt they will go with a DT/NT so early, although I disagree with that mindset.

Dotson seems to short/small to be a legit #1, and we need a legit #1. Claypool was supposed to be it, and he ain't cuttin' it. And if Tuitt ain't coming back, we need another DE as well.

I made the assumption we filled all our holes in FA before the draft so we didn’t need to pick any position.

Dotson’s small and I agree it’s a concern. But there’s a bunch of smaller guys who have been good and I think this kid might be one of them that can overcome the height. AB, Steve Smith, Tyreek Hill come to mind.

Dotson reminds me a little of Steve Smith in the way he gets open and goes to get balls despite his size. He plays bigger than Claypool.

Nice mock flip. I may be biased but Munford would be a HR pick at OT. He would be a plug and play and many have him going in Round 3. I’d expect his stock to improve after the combine.

He’s definitely a Tackle and was misused his senior season when OSU basically played 4 OTs along the offensive line. He should have never been moved inside. He was fantastic his junior year and still played at a high level his senior season.

                Nice draft Flippy.

I can't give you a pre-combine draft without giving you to pre-draft FA haul so my draft makes sense.

So, in pre-draft FA we re-sign starters Edmunds and Witherspoon, and sign an at large FA starters at CB and RT. Tuitt retires.

With that, the draft looks like this:
1 K. Green-OG, or, if the big 5 OL are gone (I think Green is the most likely left at 20), Z. Johnson-OG
                2 T. Jones-NT
                3 D. Beavers-ILB
                4 L. Tenuta-OT
                6 D. Gray-WR
                7 R. Blankenship-S
                7 N. Ford-C/G

                UDFA--L. Brown-RB, B. Petrula-OG, M. Allen-C, B. Covey-WR/KR

So true. Although I’ve been advocating for a high round TE for years and finally we got one last year so there’s that

You probably are right. I didn’t know a ton about him but I was looking at bigger school guys that were going lower in mocks and I saw him rated pretty low and looked him up and noticed he was pretty decent at T and I figured maybe the team hears some good stories from Haskins since he played with him. I dunno, a bit of a wild guess, but he really did seem a lot better in the past and I couldn’t figure out why they moved him inside.

I like the guys I know and have a couple more to research.

Agree we gotta figure out FA first and that’s why I decided to do a draft before FA and before the combine to see how far off I am. I’m sure we’ll end up with FAs I don’t expect and guys will improve or drop after the combine results.

I like Willis and think the Steelers do too. But I think he's going higher than our slot and I'm not trying to do a trade up scenario here.

Love your first three picks. Would possibly swap Clark with Chad Muma
