I think it's both. Ben was never a big practice guy with the desire for tons and tons of reps like Manning or Marcia. I believe he's even said it himself. And Tomlin catered to him.

Ben beat to a different drum than a lot of QBs. His style didn't translate to playing well in his late 30's.

To the comments I've seen here about Tomlin being too comfortable with job security... I don't think that job security guides his decisions. Ego maybe. But not job security. I'm sure he doesn't want to exit the playoffs in embarassing fashion for the rest of his career. So, his ego to hire from within and run the team himself is going to be at battle with his ego to do a lot better in the playoffs. It's time for him to look in the mirror and bring in better staff. And none of that even matters if we don't get better players. There's only a handful of guys that are definite keepers on both sides of the ball. Let's not waste TJ's best years please.

didn't you hear that we were the AFC favorites to be in the Super Bowl 6 out of the last 11 years?

Mason better practice because I don’t see many wins coming from him under center. Personally, I don’t see him starting to begin the season.

        My opinion.

Another frustrating playoff loss but no one really expected us to make it before the season began due to a lack of talent.

I’m ready for the next QB to work his tail off to prove he is our next franchise QB.

I agree that we should do real searches for our next coordinators.

I thought the same thing when we got rid of Haley. I wanted to keep him. But if we got rid of him, I wanted to bring in the best guy we could. Not just someone who was close by.

ha.. of course he is going to practice. Not sure if he wins the job but I think its his to lose. I would be shocked if we spent big money on a vet QB this offseason.

Nothing new to discuss here really. Same narrative for last couple of years.

I do think Tomlin finally gets held accountable for coordinators going forward in a post Ben world. He probably also gets more accountability for roster going fwd.

I do wonder whose call it was to stick with Ben for the last decade plus when he was past his prime. The only thing I would question is was the roster and coaches hostage to Ben sticking around too long?

We’ll finally get to see what the team can do without being saddled with a big QB contract.

i hope we don’t go sign some other FA QB to ab overpriced contract again to try and cover all the warts.

Doubt we spend big money but they will sign someone off the scrap heap. I’m not even sure if they will bring back Haskins.

The RFA tender is so cheap that I assume that we'll at least bring him to camp. And that he'll hold down the QB3 spot unless he does something silly.

I forgot that Dobbs is still around. It might be either Dobbs or Haskins.

I would think in the NFL the most important quality to have in a position coach is , the ability to judge talent. The players by the time they enter the NFL,have had 8 years of technique practice, correct. The head coach must be able to motivate his players and have confidence in his coordinators correct.

I believe Mike Tomlin has excellent motivational and leadership qualities. I do not think he is a good judge of talent. That is obvious from our lack of quality defensive backs over the last 10 years or since Dick LeBeau left. Our offensive line is bad and I don't know who picked them. Who was picking them that is no longer there.

I would agree with the article in that we need to bring in New people who can judge the talent. With all due respect to Mike Tomlin he is a good head coach for today's NFL but he is not a good judge of talent. Art II has to step up and be that judge and take charge.

I could throw in that Cam Heyward only gets better with age and excelled this season at almost the same level. And that Minkah Fitzpatrick, after a slow start, rediscovered his own extraordinary form. That's one, two, three elite or potentially elite pieces on defense.

One doesn't rebuild in that setting, no matter the ineptitude on the other side of the ball. It'd be insane.

It'd also be unnecessary. No league in North American sports allows for faster reloads than the NFL, and that goes double when that team's swimming in cap space. Which the Steelers, in an immense rarity, will have entering 2022. At least $45 million and, in all likelihood following some predictable cuts, much more.

Frankly, I think we missed out on a SB or two because of firing Arians... Ben's career may have been 3-4 years shorter, but they would have been meaningful years instead of this BS he's endured the last few years with this short passing crap.

Eh, I don't think the defense was ever really good enough. 2016 and 2017 were their best shots and the offense wasn't the main issue in the playoff losses in either of those years.
