So your 2 down NT forces the offense to change the way they want to play in order to avoid him? Football is a sport of matchups. Forcing the opposition out of their comfort zone is a good thing. If multiple receivers is their comfort zone then you start in nickel anyway and you are forced to match personnel. If your 2 down slot corner gets the job done you force the offense to balance and your 2 down NT hits the field again. The one thing worse than having your two-down NT on the sideline is not having one available when you need him, and having the opposition hang 200 yards on you.......again.

You’ve seen this passing defense play.
is that really the way you want to go? Have teams in 3 or 4 WR sets fir most of the game?
In no way would I want to see that. I’ll take 200 yards rushing given up over 400- 500 yards passing given up
how on earth did we go 15-1 when Casey missed the whole year.
you can scheme to stop the run ( coaching).
I highly doubt you can scheme against a top passing attack. You can try, but it won’t do much
that said, I’ve already stated I would take him in the 2nd round or sone one similar later.
I’m not using a PREMIUM draft pick on a one dimensional linemanLast edited by NJ-STEELER; 03-04-2022, 05:24 PM.Comment

Hampton's last season the defense was #1 in passing yards and #2 in rushing yds allowed.the problem is, as I’ve explained many times in the past, is teams won’t wait for 3rd down to pass.
look at what teams did when Casey was the NT. They went to multiple wide receiver sets early in the game.
And that was years ago when passing game wasn’t used like it is currently.
do people really think opposing OCs will look at a guy on defensive line that can’t play the pass and say.
let’s run the ball on 1st and 2nd downsComment

This is how I feel too.
I don't mind having 2 down players.
But if two guys are close to the same value when they are on the field, I want the guy who's going to be on the field more. Especially with earlier picks.Comment

Good point. #4 in passing and #1 in rushing yds allowed;
2004 DL - Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke, Kimo Von Olhofen
2012 DL - Evander Hood, Casey Hampton, Brett Keisel
In the 15 postseason games that Hampton was the starting NT the Steelers allowed only one team to rush for over a hundred yards and were 12-3. In three playoff games Hoke started the opponents had well over hundred yards rushing and were 1-2. If you force a team to throw 40+ times a game I don't think there are more than a handful of NFL QBs that have that many good passes in them. Making opponents one dimensional was LeBeau's mantra.
Lastly, I don't think I ever want to see another Steelers game like the one they had against MIN last season. Embarrassing isn't a strong enough word.
If Tuitt does come back and is healthy to play, then the Steelers could hold off on drafting a NT early but it would be pretty tempting if a stud is on the board at their pick.Comment

.
pasing is more abundant.
penalties on the defense defending the pass and hitting the receivers catching the ball are abundant
its easier to pass now then it ever was.
teams have won a championship recently with a one dimensional offensesComment
