He wasn't exactly on the sidelines but I do believe that if Muth had turned and immediately gone for the sidelines instead of turning upfield; he could have gotten out with about 10 seconds on the clock and it would have been about a 52 yarder.

I don't think it was unreasonable to want to try to get 5 - 15 yards closer.

The issue on that play was the fumble (and maybe only throwing it for 1 yard), not trying to get closer IMO.
Yeah the play was an issue. Not sure he got the first down. If not you CANT spike the ball on 4th down & clock runs out even without the fumble.

Not sure he gets out of bounds. Wouldn't it be simpler to just throw at least 2 yards on 3rd & 1 with no timeouts?

Per the play-by-play, the fumble happened on 1st and 10. The play before DJ caught a 10 yard pass on 2nd and 10...just enough for the 1st.
Play-by-play action for the Detroit Lions vs. Pittsburgh Steelers NFL game from November 14, 2021 on ESPN.

We would have been able to spike on a completion provided we could line up in time.

A deeper pass to the sidelines would have been nice, but presumably Det was covering all that up.

That is weird ....i'm almost positive it said 3rd & 1 for a long time on my tv screen. Wonder if TV didn't realize it was a first down until right before the play was snapped & then changed it then while i was so focused on the play? Weird.

Watch this play and please tell me how this is NOT a penalty for spearing?? Leads with his helmet into Muth's body... no call:

Guess we used up all the calls in last week's Bears game....

The problem imo was the play, I don't know that 3 yards makes a difference to Boz, if he's good from 54, there's a good chance he's good from 57. They needed to try and gain 10 yards or throw it oob and try the 57 yard FG. The risk of either getting tackled in bounds or fumbling isn't worth 3 yards in my feeble mind. Even without the fumble the game is over the Steelers can't get lined up in time to clock the ball. They would have had 12 seconds to get lined up and clock the ball to stop the clock. Is that possible without a false start, illegal formation or the clock runs out?

                  From Post Gazette:

Coaching: When you’re playing without your starting quarterback on short notice, your job is to simplify things, not make them more complicated. The offense had first and goal at the 5 early in the third quarter, and the next three plays called were passes — all incomplete. Najee Harris is arguably your best offensive player, and he didn’t touch the ball. That’s a problem. Coach Mike Tomlin said the first play in the dumbfounding sequence was a run-pass option and that Rudolph decided to throw. Here’s an idea: Don’t call an RPO in the first place. In response to a question about Rudolph not going under center more when Green was having trouble with his shotgun snaps, Tomlin replied, “It’s irrelevant.” But a 19-yard loss on a snap that sailed over Rudolph’s head in overtime was more than relevant. It was one of the most consequential plays of the game.

                  Grade: F

Was the 1st play the one that had McCloud wide open and MR missed him? If it is, the the RPO was a the correct call with poor execution. After that failed play, not giving Harris a chance, either via the air or ground, is bad play calling.

On the other hand, a missed FG could have still left one play for DET to throw down field for a PI and game winning FG. I know, low odds, but on a freaky day it wouldn't be out of the question.

True enough but I'm still trying to win the game with one of the two players that had a good day.

yeah i'm agreeing with LP. i think the booth said it was 3rd and 1 and they must have not caught the refs giving the steelers the first down on the play
