Id also put a little of it on Boz. I seriously am surprised the coaches didn’t tell him to just get rid of the ball if you have an inkling of a chance you are gonna get hit. Ie don’t hold the ball like you’re young Ben trying to make a play.
And that is a whole other scenario that no one can know. Let's say Boz throws it away seeing no one open. Browns get the ball back deep in their end. Steelers D holds them to a 3 and out. Get the punt near mid-field and a few plays later are back in FG range.
Moats talked about this yesterday, saying it was a compounding of errors. First error was decision to fake it, second error was on Boz for not throwing it away.

It is for a kicker playing QB when that 9 yards is also 9 yards from the goalline, when the defense is all packed in and they don't have to defend much beyond the line of scrimmage. That's a situation that's difficult for a seasoned QB to throw in. The only way Boz was going to be successful is if the clowns completely blew coverage and left one of our receivers uncovered.

yeah.. pretty sure a fake FG is done with the expectation the D wont be ready and someone will be wide open.

it didnt happen that way but no one runs a fake fg with the idea that everyone will be blanketed by the defense.

Agreed. You run fakes based on a look you are given in presnap. Someone (no one knows who but the coaches) must have seen a look that suggested it would work. Tomlin said it was on him ( as the HC it is) but it's possible he was covering for someone.

only run a fake fg if the guy will be wide open.

well, isn’t that the whole plan behind the fake fg.

its like our old double reverse pass.. you should only run it if you think the guy will be wide open.

who runs that play expecting the WR to have to throw into triple coverage?

It's a shame Boswell got injured but the Steelers need to be more aggressive & less predictable. I liked them going for it on 4th & 1 from midfield too.

4th and 1 from midfield makes sense to me. Especially this year when we seem to have a big improvement in converting 3rd and 4th and 2 or less (NC posted the stats before the Browns games I think).

And a fake punt in a position like that makes sense to me too. Especially when we have such a good D. Fake punts aren't giving up highly probable points.

But we aren't good at putting up points, so I don't think we should ever turn down relatively easy FGs.

how do you feel about a 45 yard FG on 4th and 1 vs going for it?

I think Boz is reliable from 45 and in.

If we went for it I wouldn’t be upset even though it may take points off the board.

I am in favor of a trick play now and then. I don't think the Steelers have run one this year before the fake FG. I did not like the fake FG because I don't like trick plays where the kickers are called on to pass. I think there was a trick play a few years ago where they had the punter attempt a pass, and it was also a disaster.

I don't think punters or FG kickers make good passers. Most of the time if you execute a fake pass, it is a RB or WR or completes it. They are usually more athletic or used to plays from scrimmage.

But a few wrinkles now and then are good IMO. Also go for two every once in a while, but have a good play to make it happen. Don't just throw the fade or jumpball and hope.

Pressley Harvin showed some passing skills in college. They might try a trick play with him sometime but Boswell passing? didn't like it.

I wasn't crazy about the play but not because I think its stupid, dumb or any other pejorative adjective that you'd like top apply to it. I didn't like it because it was a day that points were going to be at a premium and we had nearly a guaranteed 3 points, gives the Steelers the lead and the Steelers were receiving the 2nd half kickoff. It just seems like sound football to take the points, go to the locker room and get the ball to start the 2nd half. That first drive might have been a good place for some trickeration with the Browns thinking they dodged a bullet by not giving up a TD to end the half.

See, I see it differently. On a day when points were going to be hard to get, that is exactly when you want to try to do that to create some points distance between you and the enemy. Why would you try a trick play when you are up by 10? It was early in the game and it was an aggressive call that if it failed didn't put you in an insurmountable hole.
