This is what you do NJ. You parse stats to your liking.

Tomlin was DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. That includes run AND pass defense.

The team had the 8th ranked defense.

They were 31st in pass yards true. Do you know why? Number 1 run defense BY FAR. 2.8 yards per carry. That is ridiculous. Has not happened BY ANY TEAM IN THE NFL since then. The only run defense like that in decades was that GREAT Ravens 1st SB defense.

They were IMPOSSIBLE to run on. People just passed.

But DESPITE all those yards they gave up only 15 pass touchdowns. They had 21 picks.

They gave up 9 rush and 15 pass touchdowns.

Their defense was ABSOLUTELY better than "Cowher's team" in 2006.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

      TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

2005 the Vikings were 21 in total defense
        2006 they were 8th

A real preview of what he'd do with Cowher's players.

8th in yards. 14th in points

he was a DBs coach in tampa. correct? i would think he would be an expert at defending the pass then. I guess not

its a good thing you don't try to parse any stats to your liking though. lol

oh yeah, he came in and took over dick's defense. forgot about that. lol

Team had a ridiculous 8 non-defense touchdowns. Offense turnover touchdowns and returns.
That is one TD every other game not involving the defense.

THAT is why you have that disparity.

He is. Only 15 touchdowns allowed despite having to defend the most pass attempts BY FAR and 21 interceptions.

                  31st in passing yardage

why aren't you using yardage as the metric there like your using with the total defense rank

Well since you want to "parse" stats to consider only pass stats AND you bring up Lebeau...
You know what NEITHER Cowher nor Lebeau had before Tomlin?

                    A NUMBER ONE PASS DEFENSE.

The only Steeler team prior to Tomlin with the number one pass defense was our FIRST SB team under Noll. The one that beat the Vikings

The Steelers have had the number 1 pass defense 4 times in the SB era.

3 of those seasons Tomlin was head coach.

Remember, Noll and Cowher coached TWO OF THE BEST CORNERS IN HISTORY.

Tomlin NEVER had a pro bowler.

If you don't "parse" you list "total" defense period.

If you ARE going to parse, "context" explains WHY that parsed stat looks like that.

It seems more likely to me that (a) you weren't being truthful when you said the Rooney Rule wasn't the reason you disliked him or (b) you're just **** posting because you know people will push back against that crappy narrative.

Its both.. but primarily due to Tomlin’s skin.

                            dude is reaching again..

and either doesn’t know what the word parse means or was so hyper focused on one stat he didn’t realize the overall D wasn’t nearly as bad.

and is it really shocking the Steelers picked another defensive minded coach?

I don't like to make that assumption about someone I don't know.

I think the internet is full of people trying to get a rise out of other people. This seems like what this is. Especially since I think NJ said last week he was going to try to do that more moving forward.

so he is going to do more of what he has already been doing?

If this is the character he wants to play because people on “other boards” are bashing Ben, well.. I will gladly play along and call it like I see it.

Hell, to hear NJ tell it, I only love Tomlin because he is Black. Being the Steelers head coach certainly has nothing to do with it.
