There’s a little nepotism with every team in the league. So I have littke doubt they favored someone from a school where Tomlins kid played and Canada coached
colbert/cowher from Pittsburgh area
Our new long snapper grew up and went to college close to Pittsburgh
danny smith is from Pittsburgh.
todd Haley’s dad was with the Steelers in the 80s.
etc etcComment

Disagree that it has to do with nepotism as much as familiarity. There’s a little nepotism with every team in the league. So I have littke doubt they favored someone from a school where Tomlins kid played and Canada coached

Matt Canada had coached McFarland and I'm sure that Tomlin's kid (and probably Tomlin) knew him personally. Especially considering that the talk about him was that he was an attitude issue, that personal knowledge comes in handy. I felt the same way when the team drafted Isaiah Buggs. The Steelers had just hired Karl Dunbar, former Alabama Dline coach, and I'm sure that the team used him as a referral.Comment

Sometimes the things that some fans believe and post are a real head scratcher. Maybe I fall into that category sometimes?
I just don't see the connection with this MD/VA thing. The Steelers draft players from whatever colleges they believed could help the team win. Overall, I believed the Steelers did well in the draft.
It's possible that they might add less talented players for the good of team chemistry or for other reasons. But then they also took risks drafting or signing "questionable" but talented players over the years.
Oh well. I guess we can let people believe what they wish.Comment

The headscratcher is the "fans" who do nothing but bitch and complain about the team and its personnel...but they claim to be fans. Yea right!!!Sometimes the things that some fans believe and post are a real head scratcher. Maybe I fall into that category sometimes?

Drafting is a lot like the stock market. If you are a savvy trader you might have information that the general public doesn't have so you can find value. No different here. Use connections on teams and players to get information that other teams might not have (especially on character and desire), and make picks that others might not consider.
Having said this, there is a danger of narrowing your sights too much and missing out on other players in the pool. Gotta trust the org knows what they are doing, which for DBs, is a little sketchy.Comment
