I don't think Mason and Haskins were EVER competing for number 2

I really think the plan from the start was that Haskins was going to be number 3 this season. They don't want to play his this season.

Only way Haskin plays is if Ben and Mason are injured, or be this seasons "Duck" if Mason is horrible in relief.

There was never a competition for number 2 or he would have played more than mop up.

He is strictly a future investment.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

Yup- Agreed. I thought this all along.

Also, it's entirely possible, that neither of those 2 are the answer going forward in 2022,2023, etc. Actually still think Ben has a few more years in him, at least 1, maybe 2, and then they'll look for the replacement.

I agree. Unless Mason fell on his face, he was going to be the 2 going in.

I think Haskins was competing for #3, but also was locked unless he totally screwed up.

The real competition starts next year. Assuming DH status engaged enough to get an RFA tender. I think (and hope) he will.

100% accurate. As I posted elsewhere, the team trusts Mason more right now. Haskins still has to earn that trust. I agree they are looking at him as an option post-Ben

This is what I've been saying. Tomlin sees Haskins as the future but knows this is a process. MRs job was never in jeopardy. Haskins needs time to just sit and learn. To be given the reigns this early wouldn't be good for Haskins development.

I knew it would be damn near impossible to unseat MR. Dobbs was able to hold of
MR his first year when he was drafted.

But I still would’ve liked to see Haskins with the starters for a drive or 2.

MR showed that he can get us into the RZ but TD’s still seem out of reach.

Me too. I think they did this in practice sometimes so the coaches probably have some idea of what it looks like.

But I've been pretty impatient to try to get glimpses of what the future looks like.

After the Lions PS game, I'm also a bit more encouraged about the present.

Yep. Once Duck was out of here , it was all about Haskins just coming in and getting comfortable and learning to do things the Steeler way going forward. Next year will be interesting but for now it's a 1,2,3 pecking order.
