woodley to the pro bowl this year

It may seem like a strange time of year to talk about the Pro Bowl but it's never too early to take a look at the emerging talent capable of a trip to Honolulu.

NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt was making a point the other day on his radio show about how 20-plus players made their first Pro Bowl last year. It got me to thinking about the players working hard to get ready for the 2008 season and possibly their first Pro Bowl year.

I have put together a list of the probable candidates poised to take the jump from solid starter to star in 2008. I went to the fans for their opinions because they have a voice in the process. I also turned towards players and coaches for their insight about emerging stars; it didn't take long to get a list of twenty potential candidates.

While it took Fred Taylor 10 years and 10,000 yards rushing before he made his first Pro Bowl, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, and Joe Thomas all got the call in their rookie years. Keep in mind that 2007 Pro Bowlers Asante Samuel, Jarred Allen, and Tony Richardson have all switched conferences during the offseason. Brett Favre retired, Jonathan Ogden appears to be retiring and no one is sure where Jason Taylor will play in 2008.

Volatility has always been a reality in the NFL personnel business and it has a ripple affect on Pro Bowl rosters. Last year an NFL.com poll after the Pro Bowl game listed the top four exciting players in the game and it included three recent newcomers: Adrian Peterson, Antonio Cromartie and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Having a great year in 2008 is what will get players to Hawaii, but it also doesn't hurt if the player had a solid 2007 season. Team success and fan passion to stuff the ballot box are factors in the process, but when a coach or GM tells me about an emerging star on his roster, especially at positions where stats don't dominate the discussion like offensive line, it is very important.

Here are the top 10 players that have emerged from my discussions over the past few weeks.

    1. Mario Williams, DE, Houston: Heading into his third season after 14 sacks last year and 18.5 in his first two years. A teammate said Williams is walking around at 300 lb. and looks unblockable.

    2. LaRon Landry, S, Washington: As a rookie, Landry finished up the 2007 season with 95 tackles and 1.5 sacks. A front office executive said Landry did an amazing job after the death of Sean Taylor.

    3. Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans: In two seasons he has 168 receptions and 19 touchdowns. As one defensive back told me, Colston should be headed to his third pro bowl by now but this should be his year or there's something wrong with the system.

    4. Arron Sears, OG, Tampa Bay: Coaches around the league continually brought his name up as a dominating run blocker and a player they would love to have on their team.

    5. Nick Barnett, ILB, Green Bay: Barnett had 131 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks and 2 interceptions last year. He averaged 121 tackles a season throughout the first five years of his career. Packers fans mentioned him the most as the player they want to see in the Pro Bowl and the Packer fans vote.

    6. Plaxico Burress, WR, Giants: Burress established himself as a star during the Giants' Super Bowl run. His performance in the NFC Championship Game in Green Bay set him apart from the pack. He has found the end zone 29 times in the regular season during his three years with the Giants. More than one fan claimed he's the greatest offseason acquisition in the history of the Giants.

    7. David Garrard, QB, Jacksonville: He wasn't even the starter when camp got under way last year but by the end of the season his 18 touchdowns to just three interceptions got everyone's attention. The Jags look ready for a great season in 2008 and that should put Garrard in the limelight.

    8. Nick Hardwick, C, San Diego: Coaches tell me they consider him the best center in the AFC. He missed four games last year but is on the verge of star status. Fans have to pay close attention to him this year.

    9. Jon Beason, LB, Carolina: Beason had 140 tackles last year as a rookie but was overshadowed by rookie Patrick Willis in San Francisco. Beason is very much on the radar screen for the offensive linemen who had to block him last year.

    10. LaMarr Woodley, LB, Pittsburgh: Steeler fans know defense and when they like a player they get behind him in a big way. Woodley is a very popular young player in the Steel City.

Here are the next 10 names that emerged while looking for potential 2008 first-time pro bowlers: Tamba Hali, DE, Kansas City; Jamaal Jackson, C, Philadelphia; Kamerion Wimbley, OLB, Cleveland; Karlos Dansby, OLB, Arizona; Darrelle Revis, CB, New York Jets; Donte Whitner, S, Buffalo; Lee Evans, WR, Buffalo.

The three top rookies to get some attention were Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland; Jonathan Stewart, RB, Carolina and Jake Long, OT, Miami.

Finally, if 2007 repeats itself then there will be upwards of 20 new Pro Bowlers in 2008. Some of the players listed above will make the trip but what's just as intriguing are the guys we're not even thinking about heading into the season. Could the list include Marshawn Lynch, Adam Carriker, Laurence Maroney, or a 10-year veteran waiting his whole career to get the call?

Good read... I also think Woodley gets some attention this year as well, and if Timmons can step up I'll be more than thrilled. I would also like to see them ink Booger, if healthy enough for depth sake anyway. Hopefully our Safeties will be back to optimal health and if so I think we'll see a pretty solid defense. Maybe if we all gave considerable donations we could lure Jason Taylor out of Miami, who's in? We're only talkin for a year or two now...

I'm not as optimistic about Gerrard.... let's just say, I don't want to be optimistic. This is one guy I wouldn't like to see have a good year. He is the gas that makes the Jacksonville engine run. I'd like nothing better than Gerrard to have an offseason. With their offseason acquisitions in both FA and the draft, Jacksonville will be tougher. Their power ranking is the highest I've ever seen it in the offseason.

I wasn't aware that Beason had such a wonderful rookie campaign. 140 tackles is surely beastly. I'd have to disagree with Kenny's wish for a Jason Taylor sighting in PA. He wouldn't fit in our scheme and I don't think the FO would cough up a number one draft pick for his services. He'd be a fish out of water in how our defense is structured, and wouldn't be worth the cost to retain his services for what would amount to limited playtime.

Well, agreed about the Jason Taylor muse. I wouldn't want them nor would I think they bid let alone break the bank for the guy. (Just wishful thinking and or discount $$$ seeing his age and maybe he'd actually like to play on a team with post season potential) The only reason I brought up the collection concept to get him, I can get about $50.00 by next weekend if the wife allows it... Anyone else wanna contribute?

I would like to see a different center make his first Pro Bowl. Hartwig over Hardwick. Yeah, that's the ticket!
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Woodley will need to have at least 10 sacks to be considered for the Pro Bowl. I think he will reach that mark.

Agreed. I think that 12 is the magic number in this upcoming sophomore year for Woodley.

If Woodley gets 12 the biggest benficiaries will be the other LBs. The opponents will have to gear their protections to stop him and that means less resistence for Harrison and opening opportunities for Timmons and Farrior. It could also mean a big year for Aaron Smith. If Woodely forces adjustments to stop his outside rush then Smith could have big year with less double teams and the QB being forced up into the pocket and into his arms.

Excellent observation, O. When you have to gameplan for prolific passrusher, it will always creates seems for other opportunistic players in the fold. The impressive thing about Woodley is that he's stout with a low center of gravity. I saw some impressive footage of him when playing at Michigan. Great use of leverage and a really great motor.... all great attributes when your looking at a passrusher.

Or change that to "the biggest reason will be Aaron Smith". Smith is the most underrated member of our D - although he isn't as much now that we have all seen what the D looked like without him - and his stellar efforts will open up big plays for the LBs. Woodley will be the biggest beneficiary, and we will realize exactly how poor Clark Haggans has played for us these past years.

If Smith returns from injury, Hampton can return to form, and Keisel plays better than he did last year, then all of our LBs, especially Woodley, will have big years.

Jason Taylor is all Hollywood now. Pittsburgh is about as anti-Hollywood as you can get & I don't think he'd be happy in the Steel city.

NFL Total Access stated that it would take a 2nd rounder to get him. I don't think the Steelers would want to part with a 2nd rounder for a year or 2 of Pro Bowl level like play.

I would DEF. trade a second rounder for two years of pro-bowl level play, it could mean the difference between us getting a championship or not.

that being said, i don't think he's the right fit for us by any means. I'm merely commenting on that type of scenario.

would you trade a second rounder for two years of pro-bowl CB play from champ?
                        I would

how many seasons of pro-bowl level play have we gotten from the last 5 2nd round picks?
i don't feel like doing the research, but i bet it ain't a bunch.

Sweed, Woodley and A. Smith have been our last 3 second rounders. If Sweed & Woodley play as most of us here think they will, I wouldn't trade them for J. Taylor. A. Smith, I think will be good. He got a bad rap last year when he started running his mouth & has done a great job to letting us know that he is very immature. I pray and am hopeful that another year in the Steeler system will help with his maturity.

Now, the 3 previous second rounders I would trade in a heartbeat for Taylor: McFadden, Colclough, and A. Jackson.

So far w/Tomlin on board, I love our 2nd rounders & therefore wouldn't trade what Tomlin brings to the draft table in the 2nd round for a aging DE with his head in Hollywood..

Anthony Smith was our second pick of that draft, but he taken in the 3rd round. After giving up our original picks at the end of the 3rd and 4th rounds to move up from #32 to #25 to take Santonio, we traded our 2nd rounder to the Vikings (they took Tarvaris Jackson) for their two 3rd rounders (we took Anthony Smith and Willie Reid).
