Oh wait, he was a Pro Bowler last season...he deserves an extension.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

    TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

yep, even if injured and we expect him to perform better. You can’t throw a bag at him hoping for better production.

I can see a small dip but I think DD fell off and age and performance has him in a difficult position.

but asking a vet to prove it on the last year of their contract is risky business.
While true, generally speaking linemen don't get better after age 30. They may hold their own for a few years but the decline will come. It's the team's job then to guess when and how far that decline will be. Not that the Steelers a considering it, but wasn't there a coach that once said it's better to release a player one year early than one year late?

No one knows when a fall from grace will happen. I think injuries took a mental and physical toll on Decastro last year. Does the organization believe Decastro has 3 or 4 good years left?

It appears the Steelers are content with handling long term extensions after the 2021 season.

I think that speaks to how the Steelers feel about DeCastro..... they'll wait to see how his season pans out before throwing a contract at him.

DeCastro has been mostly an iron horse throughout his career prior to last season. Unfortunately he had a knee injury in training camp and then an oblique issue. Way too early to know if it's the beginning of the end or an odd blip in an otherwise healthy career. He could easily return to form for a couple of years.

I hope it is more an injury issue than him going jacka$$ like Alan Faneca did

well, I never begrudge a player for trying to get max dollars in this business.
