Trading Down in the Draft

Can anyone convince me there is a reason to stay put at 24 and make a pick rather than trying to trade back?

On one hand, we need more picks now than ever, but that is not even on my mind here. I just see so many players that we all like that are likely going to be available at the end of the 1st and into the 2nd.

There are so many guys I like in rounds 1 to 4, it just feels like more picks would have huge value this year.

Who would have to be on the board at 24 for us to stay there and make the pick? I am not sure there will be a guy in that spot that will be significantly better than guys picked at the top of the 2nd round unless we are willing to gamble on somebody.

It feels like we could get sucked into a reach this year.

I dunno. Maybe I am overrating some players and underrating some and have no idea what I am saying. Maybe I am overthinking it, but I kinda hate this 24 slot.

Totally do it. As long as round 1 is unfolding properly.

I have never been a fan of trading back. I guess it just leaves a negative impression with me. But, that's just me.

Flippy, I'm in our camp. I"ve said for weeks that the best thing we could do is trade down to around 29 or 30 in the first round and pick up an additional second round pick. But it happens so infrequently, that the likelihood isn't good.

Trading down would be my first preference. But if we stay at 24, my choice is Jenkins if available.

Not a fan if trading back but we also have to remember it takes 2 to tango.

The hard part is finding a partner to trade.

The right person has to fall to your slot and if he does, why don’t you just pick him. And if you don’t like him, why would someone else?

Seems like it has to be the right person at the right position that a team 1-3 slots behind you would scoop up in a heart beat and someone needs to leap frog them.

I see why we don’t do it.

But this year also has the added incentive we can help a team foil Cleveland or Baltimore’s draft plans since they are 2 and 3 picks behind us.

Trading back say with picks 29 ,30, or around there should net us an extra 3rd in this draft. So it is tempting. We have major needs at T ,C, OLB, Cb n RB.
If someone falls to 24 who the team believes is a can't miss, a top 15 guy lets say, then the pick likely goes in. Especially if that pick fills one of the holes listed above.
Top corner, stud LB I would say would most likely cause me to want to stay. Center n RB I believe we could drop to end of round 1 and still land a stud.

i think its possible if a team wants to move up to snag a player we probably won't be interested in. like on the defensive side of the ball and if say all 3 backs are still in play.
someone may want to move up in front of baltimore to get this guy. with 2 picks now in the in 1st round they can take whoever they have rated highest on their board and go more for need with the second 1st rder

I bet most teams would prefer to move back this year.

I think with less info about players, it's better to have more picks.

I bet it would be easier to find a partner to move up than down. But moving up would be a pretty bad idea for us IMO. Too many needs.

And that gave Colbert the ammo to move up and take Kendrell Bell in the 2nd round. I was just reading something in the PPG about trading back and it had me totally agreeing with the logic of it. Not just because like Flippy was saying - that there are a lot of good players in the first few rounds. That seems to be true. But what I also see as true is our need to grab one of the top three running backs and one of the top lineman (OC or OT). Like most, I believe all three RBs will be off the board if we stand pat at 55. One could slide but I don't see it as likely, based on what I've read.

So if the team is thinking along those same lines, then you gotta believe they are looking to trade back 3 or 4 spots, so they can move up in the 2nd. Of course, a guy like Farley or someone else falling could throw a monkey wrench into that thinking. Or maybe Colbert sees it completely different?

I like the thought of trading back a little to get some more draft capital.

That said, 24 may be a great spot for “fallers”, like when DeCastro unexpectedly fell in our lap. If any of the top three CB or Darrisaw slipped, I’d have a hard time not picking them.
