Got no problem keeping Juju... under one condition.
Ben how bout you pay his salary? You can afford it.

I'd feel better if your GINORMOUS salary paid more than one "past his prime" dude.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

The days of catering to Ben needs to be over.

Ben needs to be cut. That is if he don't retire. Don't get me wrong 7 is not 7 anymore. He can still play some but it's time.
I've been a huge Ben fan from the beginning but the ride is over. And it's not like we have this great O line to perhaps get him through another season. Add in a new coordinator n Bens salary so to me in the best interest of the team the team has to close the book on this future HOF'er.

JuJu probably won't earn as much as the WR franchise tag. But if he did, Ben would end up playing for ~$500k in this scenario (which I know isn't a serious one ).

FWIW, Ben's "only" going to make $19M this year (not his $41M cap hit). That's probably below his market value even though he hasn't lived up to even that number in the last few months.

I know that there are reports of "optimism" for Ben returning. But I kind of wonder if firing Fitch and bringing in Canada is a bit of a signal that (1) they kind of want Ben to retire and / or (2) they want him to have less control over the offense.

I think Pouncey is the next important domino. If he's not coming back, maybe Ben does hang it up?

also funny how 10 playoff appearances, a SB appearance and a few AFCCG’s is considered the worst 20 years of Steeler football.

Ben needs to retire. I remember when people scoffed at Ben being the 4th best QB in the division. He’s obviously the most accomplished but he’s old.. and his playoff performances aren’t getting better.

Agreed. I saw a report that said Ben was something like 40% of our cap next year.. seems high.. but still puts things into perspective. I'd rather keep many of our supporting pieces in place.. and roll with MR and/or a draft pick/FA signing.
As weve seen in recent years... "Rebuilds" can happen quickly.. the Ben era needs to end for that to happen though.

btw, the only actual quote from Tomlin about Roethlisberger coming back is this and it doesn't exactly say he is welcome back, or optimistic he is coming back. In fact I take this as a tepid response from the coach:

Mike Tomlin on Ben Roethlisberger: 'It's reasonable to assume there's a chance he'll be back'
Does someone have a more positive, actual quote from the team?

one other thing; it is also possible Tomlin will privately tell Roethlisberger he is welcome back to finish his contract but the team will be very different next season, starting with big changes on the OL. He will also not get any shiny new skill players (maybe a RB).

It's a shame they have to write off a season for an aging QB because it will be another wasted year of a potentially really good defense.....sigh.

Agreed 100%.. an early RB pick will have minimal impact behind this aging line.. unless folks think Pounceys current back up will be an upgrade? Lol
I really like Dotson. Feiler needs to move back to RT.. other than that.. there are at least 3 OL positions that need sorted out.

you seem to be the only one I remember on here who was ready to move on from Ben before the last contract.

If we spend that money rebuilding the OL and skill positions and rolled with Mason/Dobbs I don’t think the results would be any worse than what we had these last 2 years.

a better RB and younger OL could definitely have an impact next year.

The OL is top priority.. and strengthening the running game..

Allowing Ben to continue to be "Bigger than the organization" is a mistake that needs to be corrected... his cap hit is a killer... hes simply not worth it anymore.
