    first game thoughts....

There are lots of both good and bad in this game, but the overall thought I had throughout was:

Thank god it's the Giants. If this had been KC, Baltimore, NO, GB - I'm not confident the level of tonights play would have produced a positive result.

Speaking of positive - let's start with the glass is half empty.

sloppy play to start the game. muffed punt. missed extra point. Kickoff out of bounds.
    a 19 play drive???? ygtbsm.
as much as we want the Conor story to have a happy ending - I don't think it will.
awful break for Zack Banner. Really liked that story as well. Hope the MRI is better than it looks.
I thought as good as the defense did to make them one dimensional, the giants had more success than was warranted. allowing SB to convert that 4th down was absurd.
speaking of the 4th down - as good as our D-line was, I thought the secondary played pretty average. Need better from them against higher quality QB's.
Tomlin suggesting it takes longer for the offense to get in sync is BS. Maybe that's true for Tomlin teams. But many offenses throughout the league started week 1 on fire like they never had an off season. So nope Mike, it's just another example of how your camps don't lead to fast starts.

But now here's the glass is half full.

Offense DID find it's rhythm. Soooo much better after that 2 minute drive.
Benny Snell cracks 100 yards in 3 quarters essentially.
The O-line did a pretty good job after about the first 8 minutes or so.
Dionte drove me nuts this game - but made some clutch plays. Kid can be electric.
    JuJu was a stud
Chase Claypool only made two real plays - but they were both high quality NFL plays. Dragging the toes on his first catch - and being savvy enough at the end of the game to stay inbounds. Really impressed.
Defensive line is absurdly good. Consistent pressure with just 4 rushing.
Bud had a monster game. They had no answer for him.
When both TJ and Cam get an interception - that's a sign the defense can be something special.
Ben found his groove, showed he has total command of the game. Just don't take a stupid 12 yard sack at that point.
    James W TD was awesome
Villenueva's helmet was terrific. I like his independent streak.

Essentially the game unfolded as I expected. The Steelers started slow and rusty but took advantage of a QB really in his first full year of playing along with a rookie HC. I'm sure they'll go to the 'lab' to sort out what went wrong, but with a bit of luck we start the season 2-0 and finish sept on a high note.

I meant to say the same thing in my observation thread. They didn't play up to what they're hyped as being.

    Especially like your positive takeaways

      .
If you listened to Batch on SNR after the game, the Steelers defensive plan was to intentionally sacrifice the secondary to shut down the run game. And based on the result, it was the right call. The Giants don't have the WRs to beat you. They gave the example of Fitzpatrick cheating to the short field with Barkley running a crosser, but Jones delivered the TD strike in the EZ. It was a great play by them.

How great is it that the D doesn't have to be perfect against the run and the pass + get us a score or at least a turnover that puts us in the red zone just to eek out a win.

I thought we played a pretty good game despite all of the rust, our defense looks fast and ferocious and our receiving corp is going to be really dangerous with Big Ben at qb.

The defense only gave up 291 total yards to the Giants which is actually pretty decent.
Obviously the standard is the standard.

No complaints, especially 1st game and no preseason. Other than the injuries you couldn't ask for much more.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.
