I get it; but even as depth, they've been proven to be bust if given the opportunity on the field. But I see the reasoning why. I just don't agree with it. I would never want Davis in the secondary even in an emergency situation of injuries. He's absolute garbage. I'd rather have a guy who we don't know can play compared to a guy who we know for a fact can't play even given the opportunity.

Dobbs only use to me is him imitating LJ in practice. Other then that, he too I wouldn't want on the field even in an emergency situation of injuries. That's my angle on that.

Davis was better in coverage than OUR STARTING strong safety who has ZERO ball awareness.

5 reasons why this is a GREAT move.

        In 2017 alone Davis:
        1. Led the team in interceptions
        2. Had the most picks by a safety since Troy did in his DPOY season...2010. It took aquiring all world Minkah last year to have more.
        3. Had more picks in 2017 than Edmonds has had in his CAREER
        4. Had more passes defensed in 2017 than Edmonds has had in his CAREER
        5. The best safety on the number 5 pass defense in the league.

Still I know he wasn’t a “great” starter. But he WAS at least an average starter.

Who ON OUR BENCH could accomplish that.
We go from (no disrespect meant but) “Dangerfield” and Marcus Allen to THIS?

Come on dude, we made a MAJOR depth upgrade.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

        TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

Another reason Davis is being brought back is because he was a solid STer his first couple of years. He will go back to that as a backup.
I could be misremembering but didn't Davis have brainfarts on ST with a bunch of stupid penalties?

Hmmmm...I see what your saying but I still think that if they were "average" they would have remained right? Davis didn't look average whenever I focused on him. But them knowing the system and seamlessly sliding back in has logic behind it. I just hope their at least "average" like what you've been saying.

The NFL is a cap league.

Whether a player remains is a function of the value they bring relative to their cap hit (if the team is well run).

When a player leaves, it doesn't mean that they suck.

If JuJu has an all-pro season this year. He's probably gone.
If Bud has a pro-bowl season this year. He's probably gone...actually he's probably gone no matter what.

We might have to let these guys go because their FMV will be higher than what we allocate to the cap for their respective positions.

In Davis' case, it didn't make sense to keep him at FMV (which turned out to be a cap hit of $4M). That didn't make sense for us after we signed Fitz (I bet we would have brought him back if we didn't).

But we have probably brought him back on a vet minimum + benefit deal. Since putting a player on the roster means that another player comes off the roster, the net change to the salary cap for a deal like this is ~ $0 (this is often referred to as roster displacement).

Even if you don't believe Davis was an average starter this is still a good deal if you think he's better than C. Riley at the same cap hit.

So when thinking about the Davis signing, the question is: Is it a good idea to make your team better without decreasing the team's available cap space? The answer to this question is obviously yes.

Both players suck and have no upside. Other than that. they are great signings.

davis is a better option at 3rd safety then what we had.

if dobbs has to start more then a game or 2, then we'll be picking top 10

I was listening to the Terrible Podcast this morning.

After seeing details of the Davis contract, they said that the increase in cap his was ~ $75k.

                        Not zero, but pretty close.

both players are better than the ones they replaced on the depth chart.
