    Umm, Really??

The only way this should happen is a 1 yr deal... and if Roethlisberger can't finish this season, I don't think it happens at all. At some point you have to quit kicking the can:

Steelers Rumors: Ben Roethlisberger could be extended again in 2021

A recent Pittsburgh Steelers rumor has them extending their veteran quarterback after next season.
It’s currently the super slow part of the NFL offseason, so there haven’t been a ton of Pittsburgh Steelers rumors floating around lately. However, an interesting thought related to Ben Roethlisberger just popped up thanks to The Athletic’s Ed Bouchette.

Roethlisberger only has two years left on his current deal with the Steelers. But if he performs well during the upcoming season, Bouchette could see Pittsburgh extending the quarterback’s contract again in 2021.

He believes it could be possible due to the fact that Roethlisberger is scheduled to have a massive cap hit of $41.25 million in 2021. The Steelers extending the quarterback’s contract wouldn’t necessarily mean he would be playing for longer than the next two seasons, but it would just allow the team to free up some cap space for 2021.

Could the Pittsburgh Steelers extend Ben Roethlisberger in 2021?
Currently, this isn’t really anything more than speculation. But it is something that should be thought of as a realistic possibility.

We know Pittsburgh is committed to Roethlisberger as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. It also seems pretty likely that he would remain their starter under center in 2021 as well if he doesn’t sustain any serious injuries this year.

If the Steelers select a quarterback with an early-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, that young passer will still probably need at least a season on the bench before the team feels comfortable using him as Roethlisberger’s replacement.

So barring any sort of injury, it should be expected that Roethlisberger will probably remain Pittsburgh’s starter under center for the next two years. After that? Who knows?

With all the craziness going on, it's impossible to even know what the price should be for new deals; they don't even know when they will be playing and they certainly don't know what kind of revenues they will be looking at until the CV is truly under control. what if no attendance is even allowed? There is no reason to even be in a dialogue about Ben's future contract at this point.

Kinda agree but a +$40M cap hit can't be ignored.

        This.

The cart is way before the horse here.

We've already extended him too early once. Maybe we should hold off on this. Especially with a bunch of uncertainty with the cap in the next few years.

Just way too much unknown. I wonder if Dak will be kicking himself for not taking the deal Jerry offered? If revenues drop like they could, Dallas may be feeling lucky they didn't get a huge deal done. We'd be nuts to give Ben a new deal at this point. We honestly don't know if he can even play at this point.

I think if there is any truth in this it’s because the NFL knows there won’t be a season.. or a meaningful season.

Also think at some point we have to come to the realization that Ben isn’t the answer when it comes to our future plans.

ionno, maybe Ben is a cyborg and has another 5 years left.

No, it probably can't. But at some point you have to stop kicking the can down the road and bite the bullet.

I think we are influenced by Brady and Brees playing into their 40's....it's still highly irregular. I don't think it's the new norm. Testaverde, Moon and Blanda are still rare even with considering Brady and Brees. Not only that but None of the 40+ y/o QBs played like Ben and took the shots he did. Many of Ben's big plays happened with him living dangerously back there. I don't think that works nearing 40.

I’n kinda with you on this but I also want to first see what Ben has left in the tank.

Ben hasn’t taken big shots in a long time. Not sure why everyone keeps talking like he is still playing like his first few years.

While I’m not a fan of paying big money at this age I also don’t think health or age are the biggest concerns. For me it’s how good he plays once he returns. If he is healthy but we win 8 games and miss the playoffs I think it’s time to move on. We can be mediocre on the cheap.

If he plays well and we win 12 games then we keep him even if we don’t make a deep run in the playoffs.

If this elbow injury was reoccurring I would definitely be against it.

as with all of us, our skills diminish over time but are offset by the experience we accrue. No different for QB's. There's no denying ben's experience and understanding of the game. If his elbow has healed and he can still perform at a high level, even if less than in his youth - with the knowledge he has accrued the smart bet is to ride him for a few more years.

but if his elbow goes again...............

personally, I think he will be strong this year and make a compelling case for another 3-4 years as the starter. Of course it helps that no one took advantage of last year to make him sweat a bit.
