Hope everyone is doing well these days. I've been doing just fine, but distracted lately and not really playing attention to sports unfortunately. I literally just realized today is the start of the draft and I'd be sad if I couldn't at least get one mock in this year. This is rushed and doesn't have as much thought as I'd typically put into it, but oh well.
One quick thought before I get into my picks - I think there could be a bunch of late gems from small schools that will get overlooked because teams didn't have the opportunity to work them out like they have in past years. I suspect teams will lean into picking guys from bigger programs that they've at least seen pushing premiere talent into Day 3. I hope the Steelers really go for it and swing for the fences with some Day 3 picks and UDFAs vs settling and going a safer route like I expect more teams to do this year.
Round 2 - Chase Claypool - WR - 6'4" - 238 - Notre Dame
I think Chase has more upside that any WR in this draft. He looks like a guy to me that should be gone in round 1, but I've seen him ranked as a round 2-3 pick which I'm not sure I understand. His size, speed, athleticism is off the charts and he's got so much potential in every aspect of the game. I think a weapon at WR is what could push our O back over the top and enable us to put up 30+ every game.
Round 3 - Jeremy Chinn - S - 6'3" - 221 - Southern IL
There are some S that I like better than Chinn that might be available here, but I think he has the most upside in the hybrid S / LB role that could help the Steelers and he doesn't have to step in right away. He feels a little boom or bust to me, but he also looks like a natural playmaker that can be used in a lot of different ways.
Round 4 - James Morgan - QB - 6'4" - 229 - FIU
I think we need to take a shot at a developmental QB at some point and I don't see us in line to get any of the top prospects. But Morgan's arm strength and quick release are intriguing. I would consider a 4th rounder for a longer term try out to see if he can be coached/developed. I think he has the raw arm strength to be as good as anyone in the draft. We got to see first hand how hard it is for weak armed passers like Mason and Duck to be successful.
Round 4 - AJ Dillon - RB - 6' - 247 - BC
I think AJ would be a great compliment to JC and we could have the most punishing backfield in the NFL. I think this guy was made to play in Pittsburgh and would become a fan favorite right away.
Round 6 - Amik Robertson - DB - 5'8" - 188 - Louisiana Tech
This kid is just fun to watch. Is he undersized? Probably. But he plays above his weight. Seems smart, hardworking, and a playmaker. When I watched some of his highlights, I feel like I'm watching the next Honey Badger
Round 7 - Danny Pitner - OG/OC - 6'4" - 306 - Ball State
Seems like a good athlete for a lineman that could move inside to G or C. Developmental guy imho that could pan out with some work.
Hope yinz enjoy the draft this week/weekend!!!!!!! I'm slowly getting excited and hope football comes back soon!!!!
