    WR performance - Ray Sherman?

Ray Sherman was the Steelers OC in 1998 and if I recall correctly, he REALLY stunk it up... He took over as WR coach in Aug of this year. Coincidence that the receivers aren't playing so well anymore? Porter leaves - LBs are better, Lake leaves - secondary is better. To be fair, the talent has recently improved too, but coaching can make a difference.

All know is that I wanted to throw up when I heard Ray was back, and all of the sudden the receivers kind of suck...

    He fit the bill.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

I think it's more likely that our lack of experience at the position, combined with lack of experience at QB, has led to some struggling. I really think Diontae Johnson with JuJu could be special, and Washington is showing some signs that he could at least be serviceable.

Sometimes it does seem as though our WRs have difficulty getting separation, but let's see how they look a month from now. I've got my fingers crossed.

Well we also aren't getting a lot of high level play from the QB position and being that the success of the wide receiver position is directly reliant on the QB position that probably has a lot to do with the lack of production.

I still blame Ray for f'ing up Kordell who had all the promise in the world the season before he showed up.

I've heard people praise Ray and like him, so what do I know. But I'm kinda of the mindset he might be mediocre. Just dunno?

I think all of it has to be reviewed at the end of the year. Valid point thou...

When things are going well it’s easier to assign credit. When things aren’t going well it’s harder to assign blame because it’s only a guess things would be better under another coach. I don’t know how good Sherman is at coaching receivers - but my own eyes have allowed me to see far too many balls from Rudolph nowhere NEAR where they should be. There’s such a fine line in the NFL, it would be unfair to Sherman not to allow for the fact of Rudolph’s inaccuracies on many of this throws.

That is not to give a pass (no pun intended) to ray for poor route running and failure to get separation either. That’s been going on as well.

I may be misremembering, but I think Kordell was very involved in that hire because IIRC he'd been through several OCs and the team wanted him to be able to pick someone he was comfortable with.

But, maybe that was a mistake (I think our hire of Fitchner was similar and not a good process).

I think the answer is " C"....all of the above. Not just rudolph, not just the WR's, all of it needs fixing.

From what I recall, Ray Sherman had a decent track record as a WR coach, but a subpar track record as an offensive coordinator. With Drake dying unexpectedly during training camp, I don't think there were many better options available at that late date. I'd look for an upgrade here next year.

The WR issues are a combination of things. Rudolph has missed some guys when they are wide open, the receivers have struggled, and the play calling leaves something to be desired.

In the pros, since 1988, Ray Sherman has held 14 positions. I know that coaches move around a lot but this guy doesn't seem to stick anywhere for very long. Here is his entire coaching history (include college) according to Wikipedia.

it's not like Ab's out there with Martavis Bryant and JuJu's battling Eli for the 3rd WR spot. There's some growing happening. And the WR coach died. Not like you're going to pluck a WR coach from a team during camp. Ray was probably all that was left at that point. Given what's going on at QB, we take this as growing pains and know that they'll find someone.
